FREDERICTON -- The St. Thomas University Tommies edged McGill 5-4 in a shootout
Saturday night at the (second annual V-Reds Fall Classic hockey tournament).
McGiils Steve Pearce, the twin brother of UNB forward Rob, scored to
tie the game with just a fraction of a second on the clock to send the game
to a shootout.
Goaltender Andrew Sim stopped all four McGill shooters in the shootout while
Jeff Bateman and then Miguel Delisle connected for the Tommies.
However, under the MacDougall scoring system in vogue for the tournament, both
the Tommies and Redmen finished with four points and out of contention for medals.
The MacDougall scoring system awarded four points for a win and an additional
point for outscoring your opponent in a particular period, a maximum of seven
points available for a victory.
X finished with 11 points, Moncton with eight, and UNB and UPEI each with seven
to set up the medal matchups.
Lafrance was named the tournament MVP. Paul Drew, who made 135 saves in the
Panthers net in three games -- the V-Reds beat him with their 36th, 37th
and 39th shots in the last 10 minutes to wrap up the bronze -- was named to
the tournament team.
V-Reds captain Craig Mahon was named to the defence along with rookie forward
Darrell Boyce.
The rest of the all-tournament team includes defenceman Sam Roberts of the
X-Men, along with X forward Nick Lees and UdeM forward Luc Laprise.
V-Reds goaltender Reg Bourcier and forward Denny Johnston were honourable mentions
on the tourney team.
NOTES: The Redmen are 1-2 in pre-season action and will play RMC in Bedford,
Que., on Oct. 7 at 7 pm
