Redmen 2 - Concordia 0

Game Report

MONTREAL -- Defenceman David Urquhart scored a power play goal at 2:32 of the opening period held up as McGill blanked Concordia 2-0 in their 130th men’s hockey opener on Wednesday at Ed Meagher Arena.

Rookie Marko Kovacevic, a freshman from Serbia, tallied the insurance goal on a breakaway at 7:45 of the third period.

The Redmen outshot Concordia 40-19 as sophomore netminder Mathieu Poitras became the first goalie to earn a shutout in CIS play this season. Poitras, native of Gatineau, Que., who won CIS rookie-of-the-year honours last year, also picked up an assist on the second goal.

McGill is 1-0 in league play and 4-2 overall, head for the USA this weekend with non-conference games at Harvard and Dartmouth.

Concordia continues to struggle

Falls to McGill and Ottawa at home; earned a tie and OT loss in the year’s first four games

Stingers head coach Kevin Figsby was hoping to come off the first four games of the season with a 2-2 record. After four games, the team’s record is 0-2-1-1.

With a tie in Trois-Rivieres, and a disappointing loss in Ottawa, the Stingers came into last Wednesday night’s home opener against rival McGill with high hopes. Unfortunately, the Stingers offense came up short. For a team who’s strength is up front, getting only 12 shots away was a major disappointment. The Stingers weren’t even able to get on the board and lost 2-0.

With Ron Smith and Jonathan Gautier out of the lineup, having sustained minor injuries the previous Sunday at the match in Ottawa, the Stingers were definitely suffering without these two key parts of their team.

McGill’s David Urquhart opened the scoring at 2:32 with a power play goal after a roughing call to Stingers forward, Trevor Blanchard. Concordia was handed another penalty, and the Stingers had a good short handed chance.

Despite the lack of offense the rest of the time, the penalty kill was strong, and kept the Redmen in check. Speaking of checks, Stingers veteran forward, Derek Legault, laid a thundering check on a McGill player behind the net. This move consequently cost Concordia another two minutes, and they were assessed another call before McGill finally got called for one of their own at 16:06 of the first. McGill would see another penalty, and a two minute bench minor for leaving the bench at 20 minutes.

The Stingers power play was squandered only 35 seconds into it when the ref doled out yet another penalty. The parade to the box wasn’t without musical accompaniment, the football team happily played their tribute to Stomp in the stands behind the McGill bench. McGill’s Benoit Lessard then flung himself at Stingers’ Sébastien Corbeil, giving him a nasty head check, which got him tossed from the game. The Stingers power play, which was looking listless as best, were unable to make use of the five minute major Lessard had also been given.

Midway through the third, the Redmen sealed the Stingers’ fate with a second goal. The play initially began in the McGill end, and a turn-over led to a breakaway, and after four more penalties, the night was over, maybe for the better.

With two of their regular defencemen out of the lineup, it was surprising how the blue-liners kept it together in the back end. Up front was another story altogether. All four of the team’s best scorers from last season were dressed, and combined for a total of four shots. Figsby was quick to point out this flaw with the team’s play that evening. "We’re not getting the shots we need. Guys are passing because they don’t want to be selfish." He attributed the offensive players’ woes to frustration. "They’re frustrated, and it’s tough when you’re talented and frustrated," he said. "They’re not clicking."

He was slightly displeased with the inconsistency in the officiating. "They’re supposed to be cracking down on obstruction, and a lot of calls were missed. I know it’s the beginning of the season." He then noted that it is hopeful that the refs will become more consistent in their application of the rules.

It had been a hard week for the Stingers, with it being midterm time. One player had to drive to the game in Ottawa last weekend because his prof wouldn’t move his exam. Figsby said that most profs are really good about helping the guys when they can, but "some profs are rigid as a one-piece stick."
