By Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – Rookie David Volpe of Bolton, Ont., scored at 19:44 of the second period as Guelph battled No.3-ranked McGill to a 2-2 overtime tie in men’s university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

McGill, the only unbeaten team in the CIS, extend its streak to 11 games (9-0-2), the best start in school history for regular season play, surpassing the team’s 10-0-0 start in 1939-40.

Ken Ritson made 41 saves in nets for the Gryphons, who were outshot 43-24. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior from Thunder Bay, Ont., owns a 4-3-3 record.

McGill rookie netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault was scored upon for the first time this season. He was beaten by OUA scoring leader Jesse Pyatt at 11:56 of the first period, ending Filiatrault’s shutout streak at 191 minutes, 55 seconds, the best start by a freshman goalie in CIS hockey history.

Pierre-Antoine Paquet of Cap Rouge, Que., and Quebec City native Mathieu Leclerc, had given the Redmen 1-0 and 2-1 leads, in the first and second periods. Leclerc’s marker extended his point-scoring streak to five games with four goals and five assists over that period.

McGill’s Marko Kovacevic scored an apparent tie-breaking goal early in the third but after a lengthy discussion between the on-ice officials, the goal was ruled to have hit the crossbar.

The Redmen were 1-for-9 on the power play and killed of all seven shorthanded situations, improving their CIS-record streak to 37 consecutive successful penalty kills. After 11 games, McGill leads all CIS schools with a 96.0 per cent penalty-killing rate (72 of 75).

Guelph plays the Gee-Gees in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon while McGill will close out the semester at Ottawa on Tuesday night.
