No.3-McGill ties Guelph, extends streak to 9-0-2 Nov 26, 05 Ice Hockey (M)

MONTREAL Rookie David Volpe of Bolton, Ont., scored at 19:44 of the
second period as Guelph battled No.3-ranked McGill to a 2-2 overtime tie in
mens university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill, the only unbeaten team in the CIS, extend its streak to 11 games (9-0-2),
the best start in school history for regular season play, surpassing the teams
10-0-0 start in 1939-40.
Ken Ritson made 41 saves in nets for the Gryphons, who were outshot 43-24. The
5-foot-8, 170-pound senior from Thunder Bay, Ont., owns a 4-3-3 record.
McGill rookie netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault was scored upon for the first
time this season. He was beaten by OUA scoring leader Jesse Pyatt at 11:56 of
the first period, ending Filiatraults shutout streak at 191 minutes, 55
seconds, the best start by a freshman goalie in CIS hockey history.
Pierre-Antoine Paquet of Cap Rouge, Que., and Quebec City native Mathieu Leclerc,
had given the Redmen 1-0 and 2-1 leads, in the first and second periods. Leclercs
marker extended his point-scoring streak to five games with four goals and five
assists over that period.
McGills Marko Kovacevic scored an apparent tie-breaking goal early in
the third but after a lengthy discussion between the on-ice officials, the goal
was ruled to have hit the crossbar.
The Redmen were 1-for-9 on the power play and killed of all seven shorthanded
situations, improving their CIS-record streak to 37 consecutive successful penalty
kills. After 11 games, McGill leads all CIS schools with a 96.0 per cent penalty-killing
rate (72 of 75).
Guelph plays the Gee-Gees in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon while McGill will close
out the semester at Ottawa on Tuesday night.
GAME NOTES: Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., extended his point-scoring
streak to 11 consecutive games. He is tied for second in the OUA scoring race
with 7-12-19... McGill has trailed in only one game this year and has won 21
of their 35 periods played, losing three and tying 11
After the exam break,
McGill will play three games at the Montreal University Cup tournament in Pierrefonds,
Que., from Dec. 27-30.
