PIERREFONDS Junior Shawn Shewchuk and sophomore Eric LItalien
each tallied a goal and one assist as No.2-ranked McGill skated to a 4-2 win
over Queens at the Montreal University Cup tournament in the Sportplex
4-Glace arena, Tuesday. McGill, playing for the first time in 27 days, improved
to 15-3-2 overall.
Also scoring for the Redmen was sophomore Charles Gauthier (power play) of
Quebec City and sophomore defenceman David Urquhart of Thorold, Ont.
The game featured 72 minutes in penalties, including 40 to the Golden Gaels,
who were nailed twice for 10-minute misconducts on visor infractions. McGill,
which has made a name for itself on specialty teams this season, went 1-for-8
on the power play and killed off all nine shorthanded situations.
Andrew Gilbert and Wilder Weir, the son of former NHL player Wally Weir, replied
for the Gaels, coached by former Montreal Canadiens captain Kirk Muller.
Freshman netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault of Laval, Que., made 28 saves and
improved to 6-2-1 overall as McGill outshot Queens 30-28.
The Redmen get a day off before meeting ninth-ranked Waterloo on Thursday evening
at 7 p.m.
In another tourney game on Tuesday, Adam Vaughan scored a goal and added a
pair of assists as Ottawa walloped Royal Military College 7-2.
GAME NOTES:
Seniors Doug Orr and Benoit Martin, two of McGill`s top three snipers, were
all healthy scratches along with senior Ken Davis and freshman rearguard Ken
Morin
Shawn Shewchuk improved his overall team lead in scoring with a
9-22-31 record in 20 games
Among the crowd taking in the game was Larry
Smith, president of the Montreal Alouettes, who was overheard on several occasions
cheering for Queen`s despite being a graduate of McGill
