Game Report

McGill meets their Waterloo in shootout loss

PIERREFONDS – Freshman Doug Spooner scored twice, including the game-winner in a post-overtime shootout as ninth-ranked Waterloo rallied to upset No. 2-McGill 4-3 at the Montreal University Cup hockey tournament in the Sportplex 4-Glaces arena, Thursday.

The loss snapped a 10-0-2 undefeated streak for McGill, which dropped to 15-4-2 overall, while Waterloo extended their own streak to 12-0-1 and improved to 13-5-2.

Spooner tied the game at 15:47 of the third period and tallied the final marker in a lengthy shootout, which featured 16 shooters and ended 3-2 for the Warriors.

Defenceman Steven Pearce, a sophomore from Fredericton, tallied a pair of power play goals, to give McGill a 2-0 first-period lead but Waterloo came from behind in the third on goals by Shane Hart (on a breakaway) and Adam Metheral (on a second rebound). After McGill regained a short-lived 3-2 lead on a power play marker by Mathieu Leclerc at 14:16, Spooner scored the disputed equalizer, which appeared to bounce in off his leg when he charged into McGill netminder Mathieu Poitras, who took the loss and saw his record fall to 9-2-1 overall.

The Redmen appeared to have won the shootout when Charles Gauthier thought he scored on McGill’s fifth penalty shot but referee Marc Muylaert ruled that the puck had hit the upper left corner, where the goalpost and crossbar meet.

McGill outshot Waterloo 41-37 as Warriors netminder Curtis Darling made 38 saves in the game and saved four of seven shots in the shootout.

Waterloo, who hasn’t played McGill since 1997, extended their undefeated streak over the Redmen to 4-0-2, dating back to 1990. The Warriors (2-0) will play Ottawa in Friday’s championship game at 7 p.m. The Gee-Gees (1-1) lost 3-2 to Brock (1-1) but advanced to the final on goal-differential. McGill is off until Jan. 6, when they put their 12-game regular season undefeated streak (10-0-2) on the line against Ottawa (7-6-1) at McConnell Arena.

GAME NOTES: The Redmen, who went 3-for-10 on the power play in the game, killed off all seven shorthanded situations and have now successfully snuffed out 20 consecutive manpower disadvantages (the school record is 41, established earlier this season)… McGill had to go through the shootout without the services of sniper Doug Orr, who was ineligible after taking a late minor penalty, which was set to expire past the overtime period… McGill scratches for the game included senior Benoit Martin (injured), plus three healthy freshmen: Marko Kovacevic, Daniel Pharand and defenceman Ken Morin… Among the numerous former Redmen in the crowd was Francois Lajeunesse (1993-97), employed as an engineer in Houston, who was in Montreal visiting family… Eight of McGill’s 12 remaining league games are scheduled to be played at home… The Redmen are 8-0 on the road in regular season play, one win short of the school record set way back in 1936-37… McGill can tie the club record when they play at UQTR on Jan. 17… The other remaining road games are at UQTR (Jan. 31), at Concordia (Feb. 8) and at Ottawa (Feb. 11).
