Redmen 5 - UQTR 3
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Lucas Madill of Kirkland, Que., snapped a 3-3 tie at 12:54
of the third period as No. 2-ranked McGill rallied to defeat No.9-UQTR 5-3 in
the final OUA mens hockey game before playoffs.
Playing with an injury-depleted lineup, the Redmen extended their undefeated
streak to nine straight games (8-0-1), including five consecutive wins as they
improved to 20-1-3 (.896), their best winning percentage in 67 years, dating
back to 1938-39, when they went 9-1 (.900).
Backed by two outstanding goaltenders and a young defensive corps featuring
six freshmen and a pair of sophomores, McGill ended up allowing the fewest goals
in the nation -- 29 in 24 games to finish with a goals-against average
of 1.21, the lowest in CIS history. It broke the all-time mark of 1.50, set
by McGill during a 10-game season in 1937-38. In the post-war era, St. Marys
had held the modern-day mark (1.61 GAA in 18 games) since the 1969-70 campaign.
Trailing 3-2 in the final period, McGill exploded for three unanswered goals
against their long-time arch-rivals, a team that has a traditionally owned the
Redmen with a 131-45-16 lifetime record in 192 meetings.
McGill captain Pierre-Antoine Paquet of Cap Rouge, Que., scored on a goal-mouth
scramble to tie the game at 7:54, setting the stage for Madills winner,
followed by an insurance marker from senior Ken Davis of Calgary.
Rookie Jonathan Boutin tallied a true hat-trick in a losing cause for the Pats,
who erased a 2-0 deficit after McGill got a pair of first-period goals from
Chris Churchill-Smith and Guillaume Demers.
Back-up netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault of Laval, Que., kicked aside 20 shots
for the win, as the Redmen outshot UQTR 31-23. The 21-year-old who played junior
in Rimouski last year with current NHL phenom Sidney Crosby, finished his first
regular season of CIS hockey with an unblemished 6-0-1 record, including five
shutouts. Dany Dallaire took the loss in nets for UQTR, and saw his record fall
to 10-6-1.
McGill held their own against the high-scoring Pats, who lead the nation with
112 goals in 24 games. The Redmen dressed a lineup that was missing four injured
starters, including defenceman Yan Turcotte and their three top-scoring fowards:
junior Shawn Shewchuk (22GP: 11-22-33), plus seniors Doug Orr (16GP: 9-12-21)
and Benoit Martin (20GP: 8-12-20).
The Redmen, which have a first-round playoff bye, will retain home-ice advantage
throughout the playoffs. They are undefeated at McConnell Arena with a 10-0-2
record in league play and a 12-0-2 mark overall. UQTR (16-6-2) will travel to
Kingston on Fe. 15 where they will open their QUA East best-of-three quarterfinal
series against RMC (7-12-5). Concordia (7-14-3) plays at Ottawa 13-9-2) in the
other eastern series. The Redmen are off until Wednesday, Feb. 22 when they
are slated to host Game 1 of the OUA East semifinal series at McConnell Arena
McGill could play RMC if the Paladins manage to upset UQTR in their quarterfinal
series
Otherwise, McGill will play the winner of the Ottawa-Concordia
quarterfinal.
REDMEN RAP: Sophomore defenceman David Urquhart ended up as the top-scoring
defenceman in the OUA with 7-17-24 record in 24 games
He finished ahead
of UQTRs Louis Mandeville (19GP:11-12-23) and Yorks Jon Hedberg
(24GP: 6-16-22) and RMCs Brent Maurice (24GP:6-15-21)
Ken Davis
extended his point-scoring streak to six consecutive games
The 6-foot-4,
215-pound right winger has collected four goals and four assists during that
span
The Molson Cup Game Stars, selected by Randy Phillips of The Gazette,
were: 1. LW Lucas Madill (game-winner), McGill, 2. RW Jonathan Boutin (3 goals),
UQTR and 3. Defenceman David Urquhart (3 assists), McGill
Over the season,
McGill lost only nine of 76 periods played this season (they have won 43 and
tied 24)
The Redmen have outscored opponents 28-10 in the first period,
32-9 in the second and 32-10 in the third.

Limping Redmen reap reward
-----------------------------------
Complete season by beating Patriotes.
McGill 5, UQTR 3; Get some time off to heal after finishing a perfect home season

The McGill Redmen worked hard to get the bye through the first round of the
OUA men's hockey playoffs, and having the next nine days off is a much needed
reward.
No. 2-ranked McGill completed a record-setting regular season with a 5-3 win
over the ninth-ranked Trois Rivieres Patriotes before 713 fans at McConnell
Arena last night.
It was a game in which the Redmen were without the services of several regulars,
all sidelined with injuries. That including left-winger Shawn Shewchuk, the
team's leading scorer, hurt in a 2-0 win over the Gee-Gees in Ottawa Saturday.
His first-line mates also were out. Fifth-year right-winger Doug Orr, second
in scoring, missed his eighth consecutive game after a concussion suffered in
a game against Concordia Jan. 20, and centre Benoit Martin sat out with a minor
injury.
"Now we have time to get some guys healthy again," said head coach
Martin Raymond. "We've got a lot of guys who are banged up, so (the bye)
is an opportunity to give the guys a bit of rest for what's ahead of us."
McGill is off until Feb. 22, when it will open the Eastern Conference best-of-three-game
Conference semifinal against Ottawa, Concordia or Royal Military College.
Concordia, which outlasted Ottawa 5-4 on a Bruno Champagne's second goal of
the game late in the third period at Ed Meagher Arena, face the Gee-Gees in
a best-of-three quarterfinal that opens in Ottawa Wednesday.
The Patriotes, despite home-ice advantage, will open their quarterfinal in
Kingston against RMC, also on Wednesday.
Raymond said last night's win was yet another goal reached, with the Redmen
coming from behind to win the regular-season series (2-1-1) against the Pats.
"We wanted to have a winning record against every team in our division.
That's why, even though we already had clinched first place, tonight's game
was important for us," Raymond said.
McGill, undefeated at home, finished first in the Far East Division with a
20-1-3 record, tied for the fewest losses in the country, and set a CIS record
for goals-against with 1.21. The previous record was 1.50, set by McGill in
1937-1938.
The Redmen shut out the opposition 12 times during the regular season, breaking
the CIS single-season record of seven set by the Patriotes in 1997-1998.
Chris Churchill-Smith and Guillaume Demers scored at 10:53 and 17:31 of the
first period, but the Patriotes replied with three straight power-play goals
by Jonathan Boutin at 18:36 of the first, 19:21 of the second, and 4:34 of the
third.
McGill captain Pierre-Antoine Paquet tied the score at 3-3 with a power-play
goal at 7:54 of the final period and Lucas Madill delivered the winner with
the second goal of the night from McGill's fourth line exactly five minutes
later.
Forward Ken Davis added an insurance goal at 18:24 of the final period.
At Concordia, the Stingers erased an early 2-0 deficit in the first period
with four consecutive goals, including three in a span of two minutes, beginning
with Philippe Lacasse's powerplay goal at 7:28. Champagne followed with his
first of the game at 9:03 to tie the score at 2-2, Derek Legault made it 3-2
seconds later. Karl Gagne added the Stingers' fourth goal of the period on the
power play at 18:21.
In women's hockey, Vanessa Davidson scored at 1:46 of overtime to complete
the fourth-ranked Martlets' 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Carleton Ravens
at McConnell Arena, allowing McGill to take the regular-season title for only
the second time in team history.
Davidson, a first-year player, also assisted on a goal by Shauna Dennis at
19:39 with McGill playing with an extra skater.
The Martlets are 11-2-0 with two regular-season games remaining. Carleton,
which hasn't won a regular-season game in three years, is 0-13-0.
