Redmen alone at the top for first time in history
OTTAWA (CIS) – For the first time in history, the oldest hockey
team in the world stands alone at the top of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport
men’s hockey national poll.
The McGill Redmen had reached the top of the rankings for the first time in
school history for a brief one-week period on January 31, but were tied for
No. 1 with reigning CIS champion Alberta at the time. Fittingly, McGill’s
first ever No. 1 ranking came exactly 129 years following their first game,
played on January 31, 1877.
The Golden Bears drop one position in the new Top 10 while No. 3 Saskatchewan,
No. 4 Western Ontario, No. 5 Acadia, No. 6 Moncton, No. 7 Saint Mary’s
and No. 8 UQTR still follow in order behind the two leaders. The only other
change in the new national rankings sees UNB move ahead of Waterloo in ninth
place.
No. 1 McGill (20-1-3), which established new CIS defensive records in the regular
season with 12 shutouts in 24 outings and a 1.21 goals against average, enjoyed
a bye this past week as the OUA playoffs got under way by virtue of its first-place
finish in the OUA Far East Division.
The Redmen, which have never advanced to the CIS University Cup tournament,
open their post-season with a best-of-three conference quarter-final series
against the Ottawa Gee-Gees (13-8-2-1), starting on Wednesday in Montreal. Ottawa
ousted Concordia in three games in the opening round.
No. 2 Alberta (21-5-2), which had already clinched first place in the Canada
West combined standings for the sixth consecutive season, rounded out conference
play with a weekend split against the Calgary Dinos (13-13-2). The Bears dropped
a 4-2 decision on Thursday before prevailing 5-2 on Saturday in the regular-season
finale. Alberta has a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and will face
the winner of the Calgary-UBC series next week in the Canada West Mountain Division
final.
The No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies (17-7-4) also completed conference play with
a doubleheader split, winning 4-2 and losing 5-4 against Regina. The Huskies
get to rest this week while they wait to face the winner of the Regina-Manitoba
opening-round series in the Canada West Great Plains Division final.
The No. 4 Western Ontario Mustangs (21-2-1), regular-season champion in the
OUA Far West, jump into playoff action this week after a one-week break. Western
faces division arch-rivals, the Lakehead Thunderwolves (13-9-2) in a best-of-three
OUA quarter-final series, starting on Wednesday. The two teams meet in the playoffs
for the fifth straight campaign. Lakehead swept York in two games in the opening
round.
In the Maritimes, this week’s best-of-three AUS semi-finals will see the
No. 5 Acadia Axemen (19-7-1-1) take on the No. 7 Saint Mary’s Huskies (16-9-3),
and the No. 6 Moncton Aigles Bleus (18-8-1-1) face-off against the No. 9 UNB
Varsity Reds (15-8-4-1). Saint Mary’s and UNB both needed three games to
make it to the second round, eliminating St. Thomas and StFX, respectively,
in the quarterfinals.

Les Redmen seuls en tête pour la première fois de leur histoire

OTTAWA (SIC) – Pour la toute première fois de son histoire, le
plus ancien club de hockey au monde se retrouve seul en tête du Top 10
du hockey masculin de Sport interuniversitaire canadien.
Les Redmen de McGill avaient atteint le sommet du classement national pour
une première fois pour une courte période d’une semaine le
31 janvier dernier, mais avaient alors partagé le premier rang avec les
Golden Bears de l’Alberta, champions en titre de SIC. Comme le hasard fait
bien les choses, McGill se retrouvait alors en tête du Top 10 129 ans
jour pour jour après avoir disputé sa première rencontre,
le 31 janvier 1877.
Les Golden Bears glissent d’une position au nouveau Top 10, alors que
Saskatchewan (No. 3), Western Ontario (No. 4), Acadia (No. 5), Moncton (No.
6), Saint Mary’s (No. 7) et l’UQTR (No. 8) suivent toujours dans l’ordre
derrière les deux meneurs. Le seul autre changement au nouveau classement
national survient aux positions 9 et 10, UNB passant devant Waterloo.
McGill (20-1-3), qui a établi des records défensifs de SIC lors
de la saison régulière en récoltant 12 jeux blancs en 24
sorties et en conservant une moyenne de buts alloués de 1.21, profitait
d’un laissez-passer la semaine dernière alors que les séries
de la conférence ontarienne se mettant en branle, grâce à
sa première position au sein de la division Est de SUO. Les Redmen, qui
visent une première participation au tournoi national de la Coupe Université,
entameront les éliminatoires mercredi soir à Montréal face
aux Gee-Gees d’Ottawa (13-8-2-1), à l’occasion du premier match
d’une série quart-de-finale 2 de 3. Ottawa a éliminé
Concordia en trois rencontres au premier tour.
Alberta (21-5-2), qui s’était déjà assurée
le premier rang du classement général de la conférence
Canada-Ouest pour une sixième campagne consécutive, a pour sa
part complété son calendrier régulier en divisant les honneurs
d’un programme double face auxc Dinos de Calgary (13-13-2). Les Bears se
sont inclinés par 4-2 jeudi avant de rebondir avec une victoire de 5-2
samedi. Alberta profite d’un laissez-passer en première ronde des
séries et affrontera la semaine prochaine le vainqueur de la série
opposant Calgary à UBC, en finale de la division Montagnes de Canada-Ouest.
Les Huskies de la Saskatchewan (17-7-4) ont également complété
leur calendrier régulier en partageant les honneurs d’une courte
série de deux matchs, l’emportant par 4-2 et s’inclinant par
5-4 contre Regina. Les Huskies se reposeront cette semaine avant de se mesurer
aux gagnants de la série de premier tour entre Regina et Manitoba, en
finale de la division Grandes Plaines.
Les Mustangs de Western Ontario (21-2-1), champions du calendrier régulier
au sein de la division Ouest de SUO, entament les éliminatoires ce mercredi
après un repos d’une semaine, alors qu’ils affronteront leurs
éternels rivaux, les Thunderwolves de Lakehead (13-9-2). Les deux formations
se sont rencontrées en séries au cours de chacune des cinq dernières
campagnes. Lakehead a balayé York au premier tour.
Dans les Maritimes, les demi-finales de conférence 2 de 3 se mettent
en branle cette semaine les Axemen d’Acadia (19-7-1-1) en venant aux prises
avec les Huskies de Saint Mary’s (16-9-3), puis les Aigles Bleus de Moncton
(18-8-1-1) se mesurant au Varsity Reds de UNB (15-8-4-1). Saint Mary’s
et UNB ont chacune eu besoin de trois rencontres en quart-de-finale pour venir
à bour de St. Thomas et de StFX, respectivement.
