Redmen 4 - Wilfrid Laurier 3 (OT)
CIS-Telus University Cup Championship Tourney -- Non-conference Game
Game Report
(VERSION FRANÇAISE CI-DESSOUS)
EDMONTON (CIS) Their historic first University Cup win followed a third
period comeback and came, ironically, off the sudden death winner from an Alberta
native.
Shawn Shewchuk had the backhand winner at 3:40 of the second sudden-death overtime
as the McGill Redmen came back to beat the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks 4-3
Thursday in the final pool game on the first day of the 2006 CIS mens
hockey championship.

It was tough to get your nerves going because you were so tired,
said Shewchuk, a left-winger from Lloydminster, Alta., who became a trivia answer
after the 130-year-old program won its first-ever University Cup game before
1,246 at Clare Drake Arena.
I didnt think Id ever end up in Quebec, said the Chemical
Engineering major. But Im sure glad I did.
With an an empty net and six attackers, Lucas Madill scored his second goal
with 1:09 left in regulation to force overtime.
We really belive in ourselves, that we could come from behind, no matter
what the situation, said Madill.
Yan Turcotte, in his first game back after missing six weeks with a torn muscle
in his leg, also scored for No. 4 McGill, 1-0, which was down 3-1 in the third
period and lost top defenceman David Urquhart to a game misconduct in the first
period after a check from behind on Golden Hawks defenceman Adam Wood.
Its unreal, said Turcotte, a Redmen rookie defenceman. We
knew we would come back.
Each team finished with 31 shots.
Its a difficult pill to swallow for sure, said Golden Hawks
coach Steve Martell. They kept coming hard and made the most of their
opportunitites.
Rob Dmytruk, Nick Vergeer, and Mark Voakes scored in regulation for 0-1 Laurier,
the No. 6 seed at the six-team tournament, which scored a pair of powerplay
goals on eight attempts in regulatiion.
Doug Orr, a 24-year-old fifth-year senior and nephew of Hall of Famer Bobby
Orr, returned to the Redmen for his first game since suffering a concussion
Jan. 20 and took a hooking call that led to Voakes powerplay goal at 2:59 of
the third period.
The Redmen took four of five penalties in the second period as the Golden Hawks
scored twice - Dmytruk at 1:38 on Lauriers third powerplay, and Vergeer.
The first period had good pace but ended scoreless.
Acadia plays Lakehead Friday in its second and final round-robin game, while
Wilfred Laurier will play the No. 1 seed and host Alberta Golden Bears.
The final will be played Sunday.

McGill downs WLU in double OT at University Cup Mar 24, 06 Ice Hockey (M)
By Dan Carle, CP
McGill downs Laurier at University Cup
EDMONTON (CP) - McGill's first-ever University Cup victory was well
worth the wait.
Shawn Shewchuk had the backhand winner at 3:40 of the second sudden-death overtime
as the McGill Redmen came back to beat the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks 4-3
Thursday in the final pool game on the first day of the 2006 CIS men's hockey
championship.
"It was tough to get your nerves going because you were so tired,"
said Shewchuk, a left-winger from Lloydminster, Alta., who became a trivia answer
after the 130-year-old program won its first-ever University Cup game before
1,246 at Clare Drake Arena.
"I didn't think I'd ever end up in Quebec," said the chemical engineering
major. "But I'm sure glad I did."
With an empty net and six attackers, Lucas Madill scored his second goal with
1:09 left in regulation to force overtime.
"We really believe in ourselves, that we could come from behind, no matter
what the situation," said Madill.
Yan Turcotte, in his first game back after missing six weeks with a torn muscle
in his leg, also scored for No. 4 McGill, which trailed 3-1 in the third period
and lost top defenceman David Urquhart to a game misconduct in the first period
after a check from behind on Golden Hawks defenceman Adam Wood.
"It's unreal," said Turcotte, a Redmen rookie defenceman. "We
knew we would come back."
Each team finished with 31 shots.
"It's a difficult pill to swallow for sure," said Golden Hawks coach
Steve Martell. "They kept coming hard and made the most of their opportunities."
Rob Dmytruk, Nick Vergeer, and Mark Voakes scored in regulation for 0-1 Laurier,
the No. 6 seed at the six-team tournament, which scored a pair of power-play
goals on eight attempts in regulation.
In Thursday's early game No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies erupted for four goals
in an eight-minute span of the third period to beat No. 2 Acadia 5-1.
Doug Orr, a 24-year-old fifth-year senior and nephew of Hall of Famer Bobby
Orr, returned to the Redmen for his first game since suffering a concussion
Jan. 20 only to take a hooking call that led to Voakes power-play goal at 2:59
of the third period.
The Redmen took four of five penalties in the second period as the Golden Hawks
scored twice after Dmytruk at 1:38 on Laurier's third power play, and Vergeer.
The first period had good pace but ended scoreless.
In early action, captain Brent Twordik redirected Dean Beuker's shot for the
winner at 9:24 of the third while Colin Johnson, Beuker, and Matt Girling added
goals 3:19 apart late in the period.
"It could have easily been 5-0 right off the bat for us," said Twordik,
who also set up Jeff Schmidt's goal for a 1-0 lead. "We played a strong
game from start to finish."
The Huskies, seeking their second University Cup title and first since 1982-83,
outshot Acadia 39-19 and won numerous physical battles before an afternoon crowd
of 1,268 fans at Clare Drake to open the six-team tournament.
Blair Jarrett scored for Acadia, champions of the Atlantic conference. Jarrett
tied the game 1-1, putting a rebound into an open net at 2:22 of the third period.
Saskatchewan went 3-for-7 with the man advantage, while Acadia was scoreless
in four power-play opportunities.
Axemen defenceman Kane Ludwar was accessed a game misconduct and five-minute
major for checking from behind after pasting Girling into the corner boards
at 6:35 of the first period.
Girling lay prone for several minutes but ended up missing only one shift.
The Huskies outshot Acadia 14-5 in a plodding, scoreless second period marked
only
by Saskatchewan defenceman Dean Serdachny levelling Axemen forward Kevin Baker
and knocking him from the game with an awkward hit at the door to the Huskies
bench.
The Axemen also lost forward Josh Dill to a separated shoulder in the second
period.
"I was impressed with how physical they played," said Axemen coach
Darren Burns. "It certainly took its toll."
Acadia plays Lakehead Friday in its second and final round-robin game, while
the Huskies will play Lakehead Saturday to conclude pool play.
The final will be played Sunday.

Orr refuses to cry uncle Mar 24, 06 Ice Hockey (M)
By DEREK VAN DIEST, EDMONTON SUN
EDMONTON -- It's not easy being an Orr, especially if your first name
is not Bobby.
Doug Orr does not have the smooth skating stride of his famous uncle. Few do.
He'll never play in the National Hockey League.
He doesn't even play the same position.
But the fifth-year winger with the McGill Redmen did manage to carve out a
very good university career.
"He brings great leadership and great energy to our team," said Redmen
head coach Martin Raymond. "He's a fifth-year guy and he's put his heart
and soul into our program."
Yesterday, Orr, 24, was back in the Redmen lineup for the first time in two
months since suffering a concussion.
The Redmen defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 4-3 in overtime, to advance
to within a win of the CIS-Telus University Cup final. Shawn Shewchuk scored
at the 3:40 mark of the second overtime to give the Redmen the victory.
"I tried to come back a couple times during the time off," said Orr.
"When we clinched a berth into this tournament the doctors got me on the
ice the next day. I was a little worried at first, but I worked hard the last
two weeks and I was surprised how good I felt."
Tomorrow, the five-foot-10, 180 pound Orr could play his final university hockey
game when the Redmen face the host University of Alberta Golden Bears (4 p.m.)
at Clare Drake Arena.
The end appeared to be close last night, but the Redmen were able to battle
back from 3-1 down to send the game into overtime.
"You try not to think about that too much," he said. "This was
a pretty emotional game for me, but I try not to think about the past or worry
about the future, I just want to live in the moment."
Only Pierre-Antoine Paquet has played more games for this year's edition of
the Redmen than Orr, an Industrial Relations student.
In five years with the Redmen, Orr played in 147 games, scoring 47 goals and
adding 72 assists.
Prior to going to university, Orr played Junior A hockey in Ontario.
The native of Newmarket, Ont., takes great pride in his famous uncle.
"It's definitely an honour," he said. "Because he's my uncle,
I don't think about it very much, but when I see him on a commercial on TV,
it's an honour. He was a great hockey player, he's a great spokesman for the
game and a great person."
This year Orr was third in team scoring during the regular season with nine
goals and 12 assists in 16 games. Overall, including non-conference games, Orr
netted 15 goals and 17 assists in 24 games.
"It wasn't easy for Doug tonight because he had been off for two months,
he didn't have his edge," Raymond said. "I felt for him, because it
wasn't easy, but he did a good job for having two months off. Getting a lot
of scoring chances, he must be doing something right."

EDMONTON (SIC) Lailier gauche Shawn Shewchuk a complété
Justin Day.
Poitras a réalisé
Benoit Martin a récolté
autres filets.
