Redmen 9 - Carleton 2
2006-07 McGill Season Opener -- Non-conference Game

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – Left winger Charles Gauthier scored a hat-trick and added an assist as McGill crushed Carleton 9-2 in a men’s hockey pre-season opener at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

McGill, the defending OUA East champions, held a 45-16 edge in shots on net, including a 14-4 margin in the first period.

Gauthier, the former Shawinigan Cataractes star from Sillery, Que, tallied all three markers on the power play.

He was one of seven marksmen for McGill, who also got a shorthanded goal from veteran Shawn Shewchuk. Rounding out the Redmen scoring was defenceman Ken Morin, plus forwards Marko Kovacevic, Mathieu Leclerc, Chris Churchill-Smith and Guillaume Demers.

Coulson Roberts and Matt Doelman replied for the Ravens, a new expansion team which is playing an exhibition season before joining the OUA in 2007-08.

All-Canadian goaltender Mathieu Poitras made 14 saves for the win, while Matt Silliker was credited with 36 saves in a losing cause for Carleton.

The Redmen (1-0-0) will host their arch-rivals from UQTR at the Samuel Moscovitch Arena in Cote St. Luc on Wednesday night. Game time is 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The Redmen lost only three players from last year to graduation – forwards Doug Orr, Ken Davis and captain Pierre-Antoine Paquet, who has returned as an assistant coach… McConnell Arena has a slightly new look as each blueline has been moved about five feet closer to centre ice, making for a much smaller neutral zone… Also, the goal lines have been moved a foot closer to the end boards… The changes were made to conform with the recently adopted NHL rule changes, which also mean more penalties are expected to be called as the referees will deploy a zero-tolerance policy on obstruction… The game against Carleton featured a combined total of 26 penalties for 74 minutes, including 44 minutes to Carleton.
