TORONTO – Sophomore Marko Kovacevic scored a powerplay goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation time as McGill rallied for a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Western Saturday, advancing to the York Invitational men’s hockey tournament gold medal game.

It was a much-awaited match-up between two teams that finished tied atop the OUA standings in each of the past two seasons.

Kovacevic, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound native of Serbia, was named as McGill’s Game MVP.

Steve Pearce, a sophomore defenceman from Fredericton, had given the Redmen a 1-0 lead in the first period but Western roared back with three straight goals to take a 3-1 edge by the midway mark of the second stanza.

Lucas Madill made it 3-2 at 13:24 of the middle period and then set up defenceman Ken Morin’s tying marker on the power play with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

Sophomore netminder Mathieu Poitras turned aside 20 shots, improving his pre-season record to 2-1-0.

McGill outshot Western 25-23 in a game which featured 29 minor penalties, including 17 to the Mustangs. The tourney wraps in on Sunday.
