MONTREAL – Newly elected team captain Benoit Martin of Gaspe, Que., scored a power play goal at 1:04 of overtime as McGill defeated UQTR 1-0 in their OUA men’s hockey home opener at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

All-Canadian goalie Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 30 saves for his first shutout of the season, after establishing a CIS single-season record with seven last year.

Martin deflected a point-shot from rearguard David Urquhart, spoiling a 45-save performance by Patriotes netminder Dany Dallaire, as McGill outshot the Pats 46-31, including a 21-6 edge in the middle period.

It was the third straight game-winner against UQTR in league play for Martin, a 24-year-old senior, who tallied the decisive goal in both playoff victories over the Patriotes in the OUA East semifinals last spring, including the series-clinching goal in double overtime.

McGill, off to a -0 start after opening the season with an 8-3 win at Concordia on Friday, will host the Ottawa Gee-gees on Tuesday night at McConnell Arena. The Gee-Gees are 1-1 after an 8-5 loss to UQTR and a 6-5 win over Concordia.
