Game Report

PRINCETON -- The Princeton men’s hockey team christened the 2006-07 season with a 3-2 overtime win on Friday night against McGill University in exhibition action at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink.

After a scoreless first period that saw Princeton outshoot McGill by a 13-5 margin, things opened up in the second half with Princeton jumping to a 2-1 lead. The Tigers opened the scoring 6:25 into the period with a shorthanded goal.

Freshman Jody Pederson chipped the puck up from the defensive zone where senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller picked it up and headed into the McGill zone. After faking a pass across the ice, Goeckner-Zoeller fired a shot to the short side of McGill goaltender Mathieu Poitras that caromed off the near post and into the net.

McGill knotted up the score at 13:52 on a goal from Leonard Verrili. The goal was the only even strength goal of the game and was set up by Ken Morin and Benoit Arsenault.

Princeton regained the lead at the 17:49 mark when senior Max Cousins scored through a screen for a power-play goal. Senior Kevin Westgarth held the puck near the goal line and fed it Cousins at the cross-point, whose shot evaded Poitras and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

McGill scored the lone goal of the final period when Mathieu Leclerc deflected a point shot into the Tiger goal. David Urquhart took the shot and Marko Kovacevic assisted on the goal.

Regulation ended with the score tied at 2-2. In overtime Urquhart took an interference penalty, which set up the Princeton game-winning goal. Cousins and junior Mike Moore worked the puck at the points before Moore fired a shot on goal that sophomore Brett Wilson tipped by Poitras to lift Princeton to the win.

Princeton outshot McGill by a 51-18 margin. Poitras made 48 saves for McGill while three Tigers split time in goal. Senior B.J. Sklapsky made five saves in the first, sophomore Thomas Sychterz made six in the second period and freshman Zane Kalemba made five in the third period and overtime.

Princeton was 2-14 with the man advantage while McGill was 1-8.

Princeton opens the 2006-07 regular season a week from tonight against Bentley at the Codey Arena in South Orange, N.J.
