Yale Falls to McGill in Exhibition

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Penalties and strong goaltending spoiled the debut of Keith Allain as head coach of Yale men’s Hockey. Mathieu Poitras stopped 29 of 30 shots and Lucas Madill scored twice in McGill’s 3-1 win over the Bulldogs in an exhibition contest before 1,422 at Ingalls Rink.

Yale, called for 13 penalties, gave up two power-play goals and could not solve the 2005-06 Canadian Intercollegiate Sports most valuable player. Poitras, who led the CIS in shutouts last year with seven and has had a tryout with Anaheim of the NHL, was on his game against the Elis.

However, the Bulldogs didn’t wait long to find the back of the net. Junior blueliner Robert Page took a feed from Patrick Brosnihan and blasted a waist-high slap shot from the right point that beat Mathieu Poitras just 50 seconds in. That was the only time Yale lit the lamp.

Alec Richards, who made 20 saves, played the entire game but could not get support at the other end of the ice (0-6 on the power play). Watching his teammates fill the penalty box didn’t help either.

The Bulldogs, who were called for five penalties in the first period, got burned on their sixth. Blair Yaworksi’s infraction early in the second period helped the Redmen even things at 1-1. Lucas Madill notched an unassisted power-play goal at 1:33 as the visitors outshot the home squad 10-9 in the second frame.

Yale, which outshot McGill 30-23 on the night, continued to have trouble staying out of the box and got hurt again. Madill, camped outside the crease with the man advantage early in the third, re-directed a shot on the ice that slipped through Richards’s pads at 2:32.

The Bulldogs put the pressure on McGill in the third period by outshooting (16-5) and outskating the guys from Montreal, who fell 3-2 in OT at Princeton on Friday. However, Poitras (16 saves in 3rd) was there every time in position to make the stop.

The Redmen added to the lead with 4:14 left on the clock on a nifty shot by Eric L’Italien. The McGill right winger went top shelf, blocker side from the middle of the slot.

"There were some bright signs for the future tonight," said Allain, who was clearly frustrated by the Bulldogs’s lack of discipline. "I thought we were the better team five-on-five, but we didn’t see enough of that tonight. Their goalie played a strong game and that team has a lot of older players who showed some maturity. They were fantastic at killing penalties."
