Redmen 4 - Ryerson 0
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
TORONTO No.3-ranked McGill exploded for three goals in the third period
to blank Ryerson 4-0 in mens university hockey at George Bell Arena, Saturday.
The Redmen held a lopsided 41-11 edge in shot, including a 19-3 edge in a scoreless
second period.
Mathieu Poitras, a third-year netminder from Gatineau, Que., was called upon
to make just 11 saves to earn his 14th career shutout in 76 contests overall.
He needs three more to tie the clubs all-time record of 17 shutouts set
72 years ago by Maurice Powers in 114 games between 1927 and 1934.
McGill continues to mirror their torrid pace of last season, picking up their
third shutout in five starts as the Redmen improved to 4-1-0 in the OUA Far
East division. Last year, McGill set a CIS single-season record with 12 whitewashes
in 24 games en route to winning the OUA East conference championship, their
first divisional title since 1946.
A first-period power play goal by freshman Benoit Arsenault held up for the
game-winner but the back-breaker was delivered by defenceman David Urquhart
who tallied an insurance marker, shorthanded, only one minute into the third
period. That opened the floodgates as Benoit Martin followed with a power play
goal six minutes later and speedy Eric LItalien completed the scoring
with just over a minute to go.
After four straight road games, McGill returns to the friendly confines of
McConnell Arena next week, where they have lost only one regular season game
in two years. The Redmen will put their modest three-game win streak on the
line against RMC (Nov. 3) and Queens (Nov. 4). The Golden Gaels will be
making their only trip to McGill this season and a sell-out crowd is expected.
