Redmen 2 - York 1
Game Report by Earl Zukerman & Stephen Engel
NORTH YORK, Ont. Defenceman Kens Morins power play goal
from the blueline snapped a 1-1 draw at 5:30 of the third period and gave the
No.3-ranked McGill Redmen a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over York in mens
university hockey, Friday.
The win extended McGills undefeated streak to 4-0-1 and improved their
regular season mark to 6-1-1.
Blair Grennier had given York a 1-0 lead at 2:22 of the second period but McGill
evened the score on a power play marker from sophomore Guillaume Demers at 17:44
of the middle period.
Mathieu Poitras made 28 saves, improved his record to 6-1-1 and upped his nation-leading
goals-against average to a stellar 1.73 along with an equally impressive .931
save percentage.
The Redmen went 2-for-7 on the power play and outshot York 39-29 as Kevin Druce
made 37 saves in a losing cause for the Lions.
REDMEN RAP: Referee Ryan Carroll issued a pair of unusual game misconducts
during the contests, which call for automatic suspensions... First he nabbed
Dean Haig -- a new assistant coach with the Lions after a long playing and coaching
career with U of T -- for a minor and game late in the second period... Then
he called McGill rearguard Yan Turcotte for a rare interference-from-the-players-bench
penalty, after the final siren
The Redmen are already shorthanded without
the services of leading scorer Shawn Shewchuk, who was serving the second contest
of an automatic three-game suspension incurred for mocking the officials against
RMC last week
McGill sophomore goaltender Jean-Michel Filiatrault dressed
but did not see action for the second straight game, after missing most of the
pre-season and six of the first eight league games with an undisclosed injury
Forward Charles Gauthier, who was injured in the season-opening win at Concordia,
has not played since, missing nine straight contests, including a pair of non-conference
affairs
Former McGill star forward Doug Orr, who graduated last spring
and was playing with Arizona of the Central Hockey League, was released this
week then signed by Jamestown, a minor-league affiliate of the NHLs Columbus
Blue Jackets.
