Game Report by Earl Zukerman & Stephen Engel
GUELPH, Ont. Back-up goaltender Jean-Michel Filiatrault notched a shutout
in his first appearance of the season and No.3-ranked McGill got goals from
a trio of players en route to gobbling the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 in mens
university hockey at Guelph, Saturday.
Combined with a 2-1 road win at York on Friday, McGill has a 5-0-1 unbeaten
streak and improved their regular-season record to 7-1-1. It was the fourth
Redmen shutout in nine games as the team is on pace to challenge the CIS record
they established last year, posting 12 shutouts in 24 contests.
Redmen 3 - Guelph 0
The Redmen, which held a lopsided 46-21 edge in shots, have won their last
13 regular season games against southern Ontario teams, dating back to a 4-2
loss at York on Nov. 20, 2004.
All three McGill markers came on the power play, with defenceman Louis-Simon
Allaire of Sherbrooke, Que., tallying the game-winner just less than eight minutes
into the opening period. Sam Bloom, a sophomore from Toronto, made it 2-0 some
eight minutes into the second stanza and senior Lucas Madill of Kirkland, Que.,
iced the contest in the final minute of the middle period.
Filiatrault, who made 21 saves for the win, now has five shutouts in eight
career league starts with the Redmen. The former QMJHL star with Rimouski had
not dressed for McGills first 13 games overall this season because of
a lower body injury incurred during the first week of training camp.
After playing six of their last eight games on the road, including contests
at Princeton and Yale, McGill will host four consectutive home games at McConnell
Arena, begininning with Laurier and Brock (Nov. 17-18, respectively) and followed
by Western and Waterloo (Nov. 24-25)
