Redmen 4 - Western 4 (OT)
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Team captain Benoit Martin tallied twice as No.3-ranked McGill
rallied from a two-goal deficit to settle for a 4-4 overtime draw against the
visiting University of Western Ontario Mustangs in mens hockey at McConnell
Arena, Friday.
Sal Peralta had given Western a 4-3 lead at 3:48 of the third period on a dump-in
off the glass that took a strange bounce and entered a vacated net as McGills
Jean-Michel Filiatrault had deserted the crease in an attempt to corral the
puck behind his net. Video replays, which are not used in CIS hockey, later
showed the dump-in to be offside by at least a foot.
The four goals were the first allowed in three starts by Filiatrault, the reserve
netminder who has yet to lose a regular season game in his two years with the
Redmen. He saved 24 of 28 shots and extended his career record to 8-0-2 in OUA
play.
The Redmen capitalized on only one of eight power plays, while Western replied
on one of seven.
McGill, which held a 39-28 margin in shots, was thwarted numerous times by
third-year goaltender Brad Topping, formerly of the Windsor Spitfires, who now
owns a 5-1-1 record.
First-period markers by Peter Franchin and Jesse Boucher (power play) gave
Western a 2-0 lead but Martin, the fifth-year veteran from Gaspe, Que., sparked
McGills comeback with his fourth and fifth goals of the season at 0:27
and 8:11 of the second period.
The Mustangs went ahead 3-2 at 9:16 of the period on Thomas Harrisons
goal but McGill sophomore Sam Bloom evened the score just 107 seconds later.
McGill, which has only lost twice in 12 starts, fell one point back of UQTR,
which defeated Lakehead 8-5 Friday, in the OUA Far East standings. The Redmen,
8-2-2 (including an overtime loss), will host Waterloo (10-2-0) on Saturday
at 7 p.m. The Warriors are coming off a 4-3 win in Ottawa, Friday. The Gee-Gees,
which sit nine points behind McGill, will host Western (6-4-2 including two
OT losses) on Saturday.
REDMEN RAP: The Redmen own a stellar 6-0-0 road record in OUA play but are
a disappointing 2-2-2 at McConnell Arena
The Mustangs, who lost to McGill
in pre-season play, were meeting McGill in regular season action for the first
time since 1992
They are now 12-11-3 lifetime against McGill.
