Redmen 2 - Clarkson 4
Non-conference Game

Game Report

POTSDAM, NY – Four different players scored as ninth-ranked Clarkson University overcame a 2-1 deficit to double McGill 4-2 in a non-conference men’s hockey game before 2,012 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y., Saturday.

The Golden Knights, 13-5-1 overall, dressed a lineup featuring 11 Canadians and nine National Hockey League draft picks, including defenceman Philippe Paquet of Quebec City, a seventh-round selection of the Montreal Canadiens in 2005.

The Redmen, ranked fifth in the CIS Top 10, fell to 14-8-3 overall and is 6-6-0 against NCAA teams since 1999.

McGill was forced to ice a lineup with only 18 players, two less than normal due to the loss of five injured starters, combined with strict rules by U.S. Customs officials. Forward Marko Kovacevic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, who scored three points in Friday’s 4-2 win at Ottawa, was denied entry to the USA despite holding a valid passport which was dated to expire in six months.

Aside from defenceman Louis-Simon Allaire’s 5-on-3 power play marker which gave McGill a 1-0 first-period lead, the Redmen failed to capitalize on five other man-advantage situations. Clarkson went 2-for-9 on their PP opportunities.

The Redmen paid the price the rest of the way as referee John Murphy awarded the Golden Knights seven power-play situations over the last two periods, including a trio of two-man situations in the first six minutes of the third stanza.

Sophomore Dan Tuttle of Augusta, Me., broke a 2-2 deadlock with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 6:59 of the third period.

Ottawa Senators’ pick Shawn Weller scored the insurance marker midway through the third after assisting on Steve Zalewski’s second period goal which had tied the game at 1-1. Zalewski was a 2003 selection of the San Jose Sharks.

Sophomore Benoit Arsenault had put McGill ahead 2-1 at 2:30 of the second but rearguard Michael Grenzy, a 2003 pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, tied the game at 2-2 some five minutes later.

Clarkson outshot McGill 31-17 as netminder Kyle McNulty picked up the win before giving way in the final six to new understudy Tim Potter, who joined the Golden Knights this week. Redmen junior Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 27 saves in a losing cause.

McGill returns to regular-season play on Wednesday in Trois-Rivières against the UQTR Patriotes. Both teams are tied atop the OUA East standings with 22 points but the Pats hold two games in hand.

REDMEN RAP: Other unexpected lineup scratches included forward Sam Bloom (upper body) and defenceman Steven Pearce (leg), both of whom were hurt in Friday’s game at Ottawa… Also scratched due to injury were rearguards Yan Turcotte (leg), Erik Stilling (undisclosed), plus forwards Teddy Kyres and Charles Gauthier (both with upper body injuries).
