CIS HOCKEY: Pats topple ailing Redmen in Trois-Rivières
-------------------------------------------------------
TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. Defenceman Mathieu Simoneau of Drummondville, Que.,
fired a 30-foot wrist shot past a startled Mathieu Poitras midway through the
second period as the UQTR Patriotes edged No.5-McGill 3-2 in mens university
hockey at Trois-Rivières, Que., Wednesday.
It was the first game in 38 days for the ninth-ranked Pats, who were inactive
during their holiday break and moved two points ahead of McGill in the OUA Far
East standings. They also ended an 0-4-1 winless streak in regular-season play
against the Redmen dating back to last year.
McGill, which lost for only the second time in eight road games this season,
had a makeshift lineup which was missing six injured regulars, including three
defencemen.
As a result, the Redmen frittered away numerous chances, scoring only once
in eight power play situations and failing to take advantage of a first-period
two-man advantage which lasted a minute and 36 seconds.
UQTR, which improved to 10-5-1 (including three OT losses), connected on two
of their three PP situations.
Samuel Béland of Sherbrooke, Que., opened the scoring for UQTR on the
power play at 7:10 of the first period but Redmen sophomore rearguard Louis-Simon
Allaire, also from Sherbrooke, evened the score with his fifth of the season,
on the power play, only three minutes later.
The Pats regained the lead in the second when Thiery Poudrier of Victoriaville,
Que., connected with a man-advantage at the four-minute mark and Simoneau made
it 3-1 at 11:31.
McGill freshman Jeremy Burgess of Toronto, tallied his first official point
in CIS play when he capped off a pretty three-way passing play at 7:07 of the
final period, with defenceman David Urquhart and rookie Leonard Verrilli earning
assists.
The teams each had 30 shots on net as Pats goaltender Dany Dallaire was credited
with 28 saves and improved to 6-3-1. Poitras, who made 27 saves for the Redmen,
saw his record drop to 6-4-2.
McGill, now 9-5-3 including an overtime loss, will host fourth-place Concordia
(4-11-2) on Friday (7 p.m.) in the annual Management faculty Winter Carnival
game.
With more than 1,100 tickets already pre-sold for the 950-seat McConnell Arena,
a sellout crowd in the vicinity of 1,500 is expected and officials are recommending
that fans without tickets purchase them in advance to avoid being turned away
at the door.
The Redmen, who defeated Concordia 8-3 in their only meeting this season, have
a seven-game win streak against the Stingers, dating back to a 3-1 home-ice
loss on Nov. 9, 2004. During the streak, McGill has outscored their cross-town
rivals 25-8.
REDMEN RAP: Senior forward Lucas Madill was moved back to the blueline as regular
rearguards Steven Pearce (leg), Ken Morin (upper body) and Erik Stilling (upper
body) were among the six lineup scratches. Madill was back to forward for most
the third period after it was determined that hard-hitting defenceman Yan Turcotte
could handle the workload in his first game back after having an abscess drained
over the exam break
Forwards in the Redmen injury reserve list included
Charles Gauthier (upper body), Teddy Kyres (upper body) and Sam Bloom (upper
body)
