Game Report by Earl Zukerman
KINGSTON, Ont. Shawn Shewchuks power play marker midway through
the first period held up as No.6-ranked McGill defeated Queens 3-1 in
mens OUA hockey before a packed house of 1,500 in Kingston, Friday.
Expected to be McGills final appearance at Jock Harty Arena the
facility is slated to be demolished after the season and rebuilt over the next
five years the Redmen picked up their 100th lifetime victory over their
arch-rival Golden Gaels, winning for the seventh straight time and improving
to 100-50-2 since the long-running series began in 1895.
Rugged forward Teddy Kyres was credited with McGills opening salvo at
2:23 of the first period when his crease-wide pass deflected in off a Queens
defender past startled netminder Ryan Gibb.
Shewchuk made it 2-0 with his fifth of the season at 10:51 but Queens
came to life when Jaime Brock notched his ninth just three minutes later.
The teams played a scoreless second period before McGill iced the win with
senior Lucas Madills seventh goal, on the power play, at 4:40 of the final
period.
The Redmen had a decided 41-25 edge in shots and McGill goalie Mathieu Poitras
came up with a solid effort between the pipes to improve his record to 8-4-2
in regular season play.
McGill, which kept pace with first-place UQTR after the Pats dumped Ryerson
9-2, improved to 12-6-3 in the OUA Far East. The Redmen trail UQTR by five points
with a game in hand and have two remaining contests with the Patriotes.
McGill plays at Royal Military College on Saturday night. The Paladins, coming
off a 6-2 loss to Ottawa, are 6-15-2 this season and 7-41-4 lifetime against
the Redmen.
REDMEN RAP: McGill had to make do without the services of team scoring leader
Eric LItalien (20GP: 6-16-22), who is suffering from bronchitis and did
not make the trip
The on-again Redmen power play went 2-for-6 against
Queens after failing to score in its previous 13 chances... McGill has
connected on exactly 20 per cent of their man-advantage situations (37 of 185)
Redmen opponents have only converted 10.0 per cent against the McGill PK unit
(15-of-150)
The standing-room only crowd included a healthy contingent
of management, science and education students from McGill, adorned with a plethora
