Redmen 6 - RMC 3
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
KINGSTON, Ont. Sophomore Sam Bloom of Toronto tallied twice as No.6-ranked
McGill doubled Royal Military College 6-3 in mens university hockey at
Constantine Arena in Kingston, Saturday.
The win clinched second-place for McGill ahead of Ottawa, who suffered a 2-1
loss at Queens earlier in the day. It also moved the Redmen to within
three points of the division-leading Patriotes, who suffered a 3-1 loss at Toronto.
McGill has a game in hand on the Pats and have five games remaining before playoffs,
including two against UQTR.
The game was a rugged affair, featuring 93 penalty minutes, including 50 to
McGill, which killed off four two-man disadvantages and limited the RMC power
play to only one goal in 11 chances. The Redmen, meanwhile, made the most of
their situations, clicking on 4-of 10 power play scenarios.
Lucas Madill opened the scoring for McGill at 9:47 of the first period but
the Paladins evened the score when Greg McDonald beat netminder Jean-Michel
Filiatrault on a penalty shot with just two seconds remaining in the period.
The Redmen ran into numerous penalty troubles in the second period but came
away with a 4-3 lead after two with goals from Shawn Shewchuk (who also had
two assists), Mathieu Leclerc and Bloom.
In the final stanza, Bloom notched his fourth goal in two games to make it
5-2 and sophomore blueliner Benoit Lessard put the contest out of reach at 18:07
with RMC killing off a five-minute slashing major.
Rounding out the scoring for the Paladins was Nick Cregan and Jeff Oke.
McGill outshot RMC 43-22 as Redmen sophomore Jean-Michel Filiatrault made 19
saves and improved his record to 5-2-1. Matt Hartney made 37 saves in a losing
cause for RMC and fell to 0-4-0.
REDMEN RAP McGill extended their mastery over RMC to 42-7-4 lifetime,
including a current 5-0-1 streak since a 5-4 loss at McConnell Arena, Nov. 13,
2004
Including Fridays win at Queens, the Redmen, who havent
lost at RMC since 2001, swept their two-game sojourn to Kingston for the third
straight year
D Erik Stilling left the game with an unspecified injury
after the first period and did not return
After being provoked with a
late hit in the final dozen seconds of the game, rugged rearguard Yan Turcotte,
who had two assists, was assessed a game misconduct when trying to remove himself
from a chokehold applied by the linesman
Pending an appeal by McGill,
an automatic three-game suspension is likely
D Ken Morin, who has missed
the last six games to injury, is expected back in the lineup for Wednesday game
at UQTR
That match-up will mark the 130th anniversary of the McGills
first organized hockey game on Jan. 31, 1877.
