Redmen 2 - UQTR 3
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
TROIS-RIVIERES The ninth-ranked UQTR Patriotes gave visiting McGill
an early birthday gift but rallied with three unanswered goals for a hard-fought
3-2 win over the No.6-ranked Redmen in mens university hockey, Wednesday.
It was the sixth straight one-goal victory between these bitter rivals and
the first-place Pats (15-6-2) took a commanding five-point lead over McGill
(13-7-3), which has a game in hand and five left to play before the post-season.
McGill, which was celebrating the 130th anniversary of its first game
a 2-1 win over the Montreal Victorias on Jan. 31, 1877 led 2-0 after
one period on power play goals by sophomore Sam Bloom of Toronto and defenceman
Louis-Simon Allaire, a sophomore from Sherbrooke, Que.
Allaire, who also assisted on the opening goal, has a 7-6-13 record in 23 league
games. His seven markers match the fifth-highest single-season goal total ever
by a McGill rearguard.
The Pats tied the game at 2-2 late in the middle period, striking twice in
51 seconds with goals from Thiery Poudrier (his team-leading 18th) at 17:55
and Yan Gaudette at 18:46.
Despite being outshot 8-5 in the final period, UQTRs Eric Beaudin capped
the comeback with his game-winning tally with just over 12 minutes remaining.
The Patriotes outshot McGill 28-27 and goaltender Dany Dallaire made 25 saves
for the win, while Redmen netminder Mathieu Poitras had an equal number of saves
in a losing cause.
McGill now prepares to host Toronto and Ryerson, Feb. 2-3, respectively. Both
contests are slated for 7 p.m. starts at McConnell Arena.
REDMEN RAP: The McGill penalty-killing unit snuffed out all 10 UQTR power play
opportunities, including three two-man situations
The PK squad has now
killed off 16 in a row and 38 of their last 39 disadvantages
The only
PPG allowed in that span was on a penalty shot at RMC last Saturday
Already
without the services of rugged rearguard Yan Turcotte (serving an automatic
three-game suspension) and injured blueliner Erik Stilling, the Redmen had to
make do without offensive-minded Steven Pearce in the last half of the third
period as he was tossed for incurring a hit-from-behind infraction
Teddy
Kyres, a hard-nosed junior who was having his best season (6-7-13) despite missing
four games to injury, crawled off the ice midway through the first period with
an apparent leg injury and did not return.
