Redmen 9 - Ryerson 2
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Eric LItalien scored three times as No. 6-ranked McGill
rammed Ryerson 9-2 at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill, which has won 11 consecutive meetings against the Rams since their
last setback in 2001, led 2-0 after the opening period and 4-0 after two before
exploding for five goals in the final stanza.
With McGill ahead 6-0 in the final period and a potential fifth consecutive
shutout against the Rams on the horizon, Josh McNair, a freshman from Sudbury,
scored his first of two goals, shorthanded, to ruin Jean-Michel Filiatraults
bid for a shutout at 8:51 of the final period. McNairs first goal halted
McGills stunning shutout sequence over the Rams at 282 minutes and 40
seconds, dating back to their last goal against the Redmen on Nov. 6, 2004.
Nonetheless, Filiatrault, a sophomore from Laval, Que., made 15 saves for the
win, improving his record to 6-2-1 on the season and 15-4-2 lifetime in a McGill
jersey.
LItalien, who joined Benoit Martin and Charles Gauthier as the only McGill
players to score a hat-trick this season, was credited with the game-winner
and upped his season totals to 10-16-26 in 23 games.
Sam Bloom, a sophomore forward from Toronto, tallied once and added three assists,
extending his torrid point-scoring streak to five games. The 20-year-old centre
has four goals and five assists during that span
Sophomore Louis-Simon Allaire scored for the third consecutive contest and
is second among all OUA defencemen with nine goals, two behind Lauriers
Rob Dmytruk. The shifty, 5-foot-10, 195-pound native of Sherbrooke, who owns
a 9-9-18 record in 25 games, currently has the fifth-best single-season goal
total by a McGill blueliner.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was team captain Benoit Martin (with his
team-leading 13th), Serbian sophomore Marko Kovacevic (7th), sophomore Guillaume
Demers (7th) and freshman Leonard Verrilli (3rd).
McGill, which improved to 15-7-3 (including an overtime loss), kept pace with
first-place UQTR, who hammered visiting RMC 11-3 on Saturday. The Redmen trail
the Pats by five points with a game in hand. McGill will close out the expanded
28-game regular season with contests at Ottawa (Tuesday), at Concordia (Corey
Cup game, Feb. 9) and at home to UQTR on Sunday night (Feb.11). The Patriotes
other remaining game is a home-ice affair against Concordia on Feb. 7.
REMEN RAP: Ken Morin and David Urquhart, two other Redmen defencemen also stood
out offensively in the game... Morin, a sophomore from St. Prosper, Que., was
credited with four points, all of them assists, while Urquhart, a junior from
Thorold, Ont., had three helpers and is the third-leading point-getter among
OUA defencemen with 2-22-24 in 25 games. He trails Lauriers Rob Dymytruk
(26GP: 11-17-28) and Westerns Chris Eade (25GP: 8-17-25)
The win
gave McGill a clean sweep of their six games against the three-Toronto based
universities (U of T, York and Ryerson) for the second straight year
Including
an 11-1 win against Toronto on Friday night, the 20 goals scored by McGill in
back-to-back games was the most by a Redmen team since they combined for 21
goals in home-ice wins over RMC (13-0) and Queens (8-5), Jan 14-15 2000,
a span of 259 games overall.
