Redmen 2 - Concordia (Corey Cup) 2 (OT)
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL They say a tie is like kissing your sister but in the case
of the 20th annual Ronald Corey Cup mens hockey game, the end result for
both sides was nearly ideal.
Concordia rallied from a 2-0 deficit on markers by Jason Béliveau in
the middle period and Russian import Dmitri Toupikov at 7:47 of the final stanza
to lift Concordia to a 2-2 overtime tie with No. 9-ranked McGill before 525
at the Ed Meagher Arena, Friday.
McGill leads Concordia 9-6-2 in the Corey Cup series for Montreal hockey supremacy.
The Stingers are 7-10-3 in Corey Cup play, while UQTR is 1-1-0.
The Stingers (8-16-3) staved off elimination from the playoffs and remained
precariously in the final playoff berth, one point ahead of Royal Military College
(7-17-3), with one game left to play.
For McGill, it increased the likelihood that Concordia would grab the sixth
and final playoff berth ahead of RMC and the two cross-town rivals could meet
in the OUA East best-of-three quarterfinal series, tentatively slated to open
at McConnell Arena on Wednesday. Otherwise, the Redmen will have to play RMC
in a playoff series, which entails a three-hour trip to Kingston rather than
a half-hour bus ride to Concordia for Game 2 of the series next Friday.
McGill, which extended their mastery over Concordia to 10 consecutive match-ups
without a loss (9-0-1), had jumped into a 2-0 lead on goals by junior Teddy
Kyres of Westmount, Que., and senior Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta.
Shewchuks goal prolonged his point-scoring streak to seven consecutive
games. He has compiled a torrid 5-9-14 record during that span and leads the
Redmen in points with nine goals and 21 assists in 24 contests.
Concordia went 1-for-11 on the power play, which helped produce a 33-25 edge
in shots for them, including a 9-5 margin in the first period. Sophomore netminder
Jean-Michel Filiatrault of Laval, Que., had a solid outing in nets for McGill,
improving his record to 6-2-2.
Sheldon Baerg, a freshman from Burnaby, B.C., made 23 saves for the Stingers
and evened his record at 4-4-1.
The second-place Redmen (15-8-4) will close out the regular season on Sunday
night when they play host to the division-leading UQTR Patriotes (17-8-2) at
McConnell Arena in a 7 p.m. start. McGill needs a win to even the season series
at 2-2-0.
REDMEN RAP: McGill had more penalty minutes (24) than the Stingers (14)
It uncharacteristically marked the fourth time in the last six contests that
the Redmen have exceeded their opponents in penalties
Concordia owns an
85-65-14 lifetime record versus McGill but the Redmen have dominated the last
decade with a 15-3-3 record... Junior D David Urquhart, the second-highest scoring
rearguard in the OUA this season, picked up one assist and improved his season
point totals to 2-25-27 in 27 games
With one game remaining for both players,
he trails WLUs Rob Dmytruk by two points. Dmytruk leads all OUA blueliners
with 11-18-29 in 27 games.

Stingers 2, Redmen 2 But Corey Cup stays in McGill's hands

Concordia didn't win or lose the Corey Cup, but it picked up a valuable point
to keep its OUA East Conference playoff hopes alive.
The Stingers battled the ninth-ranked Redmen to a 2-2 overtime tie in the 20th
edition of the men's college hockey classic before more than 700 fans at Ed
Meagher Arena last night.
Concordia, which is battling RMC for the last playoff berth, needs to pick
up at least one point when it finishes its regular-season schedule with a home
game tomorrow against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 3 p.m.
"We've been on a mission since Christmas and the way these guys performed
tonight was exceptional," Concordia head coach Kevin Figsby said.
"As for the game, it's doesn't get any better than it did tonight. It
had to be one of the best of the year anywhere," he said. "Both teams
played extremely well."
Right-winger Dmitri Toupikov erased a 2-1 McGill lead at 7:47 of the third
period with a rocket from inside the blue line that deflected off the leg of
McGill defenceman David Urquhart and past McGill goaltender Jean-Michel Filiatrault,
who had no chance to make the save.
The tie extended Concordia's end-of-season unbeaten streak to three games.
Rookie Sheldon Baerg made his third consecutive start in goal for Concordia
and stopped 23 of 25 shots. The Stingers outshot McGill 33-25.
It was the fourth tie in Corey Cup play between the teams and the first since
a 3-3 sawoff at Concordia in 2001. Because the Redmen won the Cup last year,
they retain possession of the Cup named in honour of former Canadiens president
Ronald Corey.
McGill led 2-1 after the second, despite being outshot 21-14 through two periods.
The Redmen had to hold off the surging Stingers, who got a bit more life in
their legs after finally getting on the scoreboard late in the second.
Jason Beliveau finally solved Filiatrault when he converted a pass from Simon-Pierre
Sauve, scoring just as a holding penalty to McGill's Ken Morin ended.
It was the Stingers' ninth of 11 power-play opportunities in the game, and
the goal came about a minute after the expiration of a 53-second, two-man advantage.
Left-winger Shawn Shewchuk scored at 14:23 of the period to give the Redmen
a 2-0 lead. The goal extended the fourth-year senior's consecutive game point-scoring
streak to seven games.
Right-winger Teddy Kryes gave McGill a 1-0 lead at 10:50 of the first period,
capitalizing on an end-to-end rush.
McGill wraps up the regular season against Trois Rivieres tomorrow night at
7 at McConnell Arena.
Martlets top Stingers: Christine Kennedy hit four of five shots from three-point
range and finished with 21 points to lead the McGill Martlets to a 59-54 victory
over the Stingers in women's basketball at McGill's Donald Love Competition
Hall last night.
The second-ranked Stingers defeated McGill 76-61 in the men's game.

Hockey-Redmen 2, Concordia 2: Redmen settle for tie with Stingers; McGill blows
another lead with post-season looming
By Paul Schwartzman
(Reprinted from The McGill Tribune)
Slotted into the OUA East's third position instead of challenging for first
and coming off a beatdown at the hands of Ottawa, the Redmen looked a little
rattled in Friday's tilt against their cross-town rivals.
Taking part in the 20th edition of the Corey Cup-the Concordia-McGill challenge
trophy named for former Montreal Canadiens president, Ronald Corey-the Redmen
blew a 2-0 advantage, yet still managed to retain possession of the prize, salvaging
a 2-2 tie.
The Stingers, still fighting for their playoff lives, menaced their opponents
and were clearly buoyed by the raucous, partisan Ed Meagher Arena crowd as they
played a tough 60 minutes of desperation hockey.
"We played a determined team tonight," said McGill head coach Martin
Raymond. "Concordia played strong throughout the game and they fought hard
to earn the point."
Despite being out-shot 11-8 in the opening frame, McGill was first to find
the back of the net, scoring at 10:50 of the opening period thanks to a tape-to-tape
pass from Mathieu Leclerc to driving line mate Teddy Kyres who slipped the puck
behind Concordia goaltender Sheldon Baerg.
"I was just going hard to the net and he fed me a nice pass," Kyres
said. "That's just part of my game. I'm ready to do whatever it takes to
help this team win."
Filiatrault holds the fort
However, in the second frame, the Redmen took four penalties, continually sending
Concordia onto the power-play including a 5-on-3 advantage. In just his tenth
game this season, Jean-Michel Filiatrault made a strong bid for getting a start
in the playoffs with timely saves when McGill needed him most.
"We're giving away too many chances and we shouldn't have acted the way
we did," Raymond said. "Maybe I should've complained more though because
when I finally did, the calls finally started to go our way."
Even while spending much of the period in the sin bin, the Redmen tallied again
as Shawn Shewchuk extended his point scoring streak to seven games, notching
his 10th goal of the season. After taking a pass from defenseman Dave Urquhart,
Shewchuk skated to the hashmarks untouched and rifled a wrist shot past Baerg.
Concordia finally managed get a puck by Filiatrault as the Stingers scored
a demoralizing goal with just 1:15 remaining in the period. With Ken Morin in
the box for hooking, Jason Beliveau scored his 11th on a rebound off a shot
by Remi Tremblay. Momentum had clearly shifted as the chants of "Let's
go Stingers" were rumbling throughout the packed crowd, spurring on a Concordia
comeback.
End-to-end action in the third
The Stingers, needing at least a tie in order to keep their playoff hopes alive,
came out strong in the final period as McGill lapsed into a defensive shell,
trying to preserve their lead. In the end, the Stingers caught a lucky break
as Dmitri Toupikov's slapshot deflected off McGill's Ken Morin as it flew past
Filiatrault to tie the game at 2-2.
While the Stingers kept pouring it on to steal the extra point, Filiatrault
managed to keep the game knotted at two apiece as the McGill net minder made
31 saves including a number of spectacular stops late.
After the torrid pace of regulation, in which the two teams combined for 57
shots and 17 power-play opportunities, both sides had nothing left in the tank
for the extra frame. The five minute overtime produced only one shot and ended
the challenge cup game with a disappointing tie.
McGill concluded the weekend and their regular season with another 2-2 draw,
this time against the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières.
Though the final standings had already been decided, that didn't stop the game
from being an entertaining affair, capped by Benoit Martin scoring with 2.9
seconds left to force OT. The Redmen will begin the playoffs at home on Wednesday
night against the Stingers, who finished fifth overall in the OUA's East region.
McGill will be trying to reach the CIS Championship --in Moncton, N.B.-- for
the second consecutive season and need to get past their city rivals to even
think about the trip to the Maritimes.
