Moncton remains No. 1, OUA playoffs kick off

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Moncton Aigles Bleus remain atop the CIS men’s hockey national media poll for a school-record ninth consecutive week on the eve of the final weekend of the regular season in the Atlantic conference.

Behind the Aigles Bleus, the two-time CIS defending champion Alberta Golden Bears hold on to the No. 2 spot while the No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and No. 4 UNB Varsity Reds both move ahead of the Saskatchewan Huskies, who fall two positions to No. 5 following back-to-back losses to Regina.

No. 1 Moncton (20-4-0-2) kept a 1-1 record over the past week, shutting out Dalhousie 3-0 before dropping a 4-2 decision to the No. 7 St. Francis Xavier X-Men (15-8-0-3). The Aigles Bleus, who clinched first place in the AUS standings two weeks ago, round out conference play this weekend against UPEI (9-15-0-2) and St. Thomas (14-12-0-0). Moncton will then enjoy a bye in the first round of the conference playoffs.

No. 2 Alberta (18-4-0-4) swept a two-game series over provincial Calgary last week to clinch first place in the Canada West combined standings for the seventh consecutive campaign. The Bears, who hold an 11-point lead in the Mountain Division standings and will enjoy a bye in the opening round of the Canada West post-season, put an end to their regular schedule this weekend with a home doubleheader against UBC (14-11-0-1).

This marks a landmark week for No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier (22-5-1-0). With wins over Guelph, 3-2 in OT, and York, 7-3, the Hawks set a single-season team record with 22 conference victories and reached their best Top 10 ranking since soaring all the way to No. 2 in March of 1990.

Laurier, whose previous single-season mark was 20 wins in 1985-86 and 1993-94, finished first in the OUA Mid West with a 14-point cushion over York and enjoys a bye in the first round of the OUA playoffs which kick off this week with four best-of-three series, including the No. 9 McGill Redmen (15-7-5-1) versus cross-town rival Concordia.

Moncton conserve la tête, début des séries au Québec et en Ontario

OTTAWA (SIC) – Les Aigles Bleus de l’Université de Moncton conservent le sommet du Top 10 du hockey masculin de SIC pour une neuvième semaine consécutive à l’aube du dernier week-end du calendrier régulier dans la conférence Atlantique.

Derrière les Aigles Bleus, les Golden Bears de l’Alberta, doubles champions en titre de SIC, conservent le deuxième rang, alors que les Golden Hawks de Wilfrid Laurier (No. 3) et le Varsity Reds de UNB (No. 4) passent tous deux devant les Huskies de la Saskatchewan, qui glissent de deux échelons jusqu’à la cinquième place du Top 10 suite à deux revers aux mains de Regina.

Moncton (20-4-0-2) a maintenu un dossier de 1-1 au cours de la dernière semaine, blanchissant Dalhousie 3-0 avant de s’incliner par 4-2 devant les X-Men de St. Francis Xavier (15-8-0-3), classés septièmes au pays. Les Aigles Bleus, qui s’étaient assurés le premier rang dans les Maritimes il y a deux semaines, mettent un terme à leur calendrier régulier ce week-end en affrontant UPEI (9-15-0-2) et St. Thomas (14-12-0-0). Moncton profitera ensuite d’un laissez-passer en première ronde des séries de conférence.

Alberta (18-4-0-4) a balayé les honneurs d’un programme double face à Calgary pour s’assurer la première place au classement général de Canada-Ouest pour une septième campagne consécutive. Les Bears complètent la saison régulière ce week-end avec deux parties à domicile face à UBC (14-11-0-1) avant de profiter d’un repos lors du premier tour éliminatoire.

Les Golden Hawks de Wilfrid Laurier (22-5-1-0) complètent quant à eux une semaine historique. Grâce à des gains de 3-2 en prolongation sur Guelph et de 7-3 sur York, les Hawks ont établi un record d’équipe avec 22 victoires en une saison et ont atteint leur meilleur classement au Top 10 depuis mars 1990, alors qu’ils avaient mérité le deuxième rang.

Laurier, dont la marque d’équipe était jusque-là de 20 victoires (1985-1986, 1993-1994), a terminé au premier rang dans la division mid-ouest de la conférence ontarienne et profite d’un laissez-passer pour la première ronde éliminatoire de SUO qui se met en branle cette semaine avec quatre séries 2 de 3, incluant un duel entre les Redmen de McGill (15-7-5-1) et les Stingers de Concordia.
