Redmen 5 - Concordia 6 (OT)
OUA East Best-of-three Quarterfinals -- Non-conference Game
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Defenceman Jesse Goodsell of Ayers Cliff, Que., rifled
a power play goal at 5:04 of overtime as Concordia rallied from a three-goal,
third-period deficit to upset ninth-ranked McGill 6-5 before a standing-room
only crowd of 705 at Ed Meagher Arena, Friday.
It was the most goals allowed by McGill in a playoff game since a 6-0 setback
at UQTR, March 3, 2000, a string of 22 contests.
The win snapped McGills 10-0-1 undefeated streak against the Stingers
and evened the OUA East Conference best-of-three quarterfinal series at 1-1.
Game 3 is slated for Sunday night at 7 p.m. at McGills McConnell Arena,
where has won six straight over the Stingers since a 3-1 loss, Nov. 9, 2004.
The game featured eight power-play goals as Concordia went 5-for-11 with the
man-advantage, including the overtime winner after a linesman called McGill
for a disputed too-many-men infraction during a line change at 3:47 of the extra
session.
Referee Dominic Franc dished out 48 penalty minutes, all of them for minor
infractions, including 26 to the Redmen.
Mike Halitzki tallied twice and added an assist for the Stingers, who appeared
all but dead, after McGill led 4-1 after one period and 5-2 after two.
The Redmen outshot Concordia 17-6 in the first period and maintained a 30-16
edge after two periods. But Concordia awoke from their slumber and had a 22-5
edge in the third and a 5-2 margin in overtime to outshoot McGill 43-37. It
was the second-highest shot total against the normally-defensive-minded Redmen
this season and the most in 31 games overall, dating back to a 6-5 home- opening
loss to Ottawa, when McGill surrendered 45 shots in a 6-5 loss.
Concordia goalie Patrick Lepage made 32 saves for the win, while Mathieu Poitras
made 37 in a losing cause for the Redmen.
McGill, which went 3-for-9 on the power play, got goals from five different
players, including Marko Kovacevic, Shawn Shewchuk, defenceman Louis-Simon Allaire,
Benoit Martin and Eric LItalien.
Concordia took advantage of four McGill penalties in the third, getting power
play markers from Brett Beauchamp at 7:05 and Jason Béliveau at 13:52.
Brad Gager knotted the score at 5-5 when his shot from behind the net appeared
to bounce off an unidentified body with just 3:08 remaining.
Both teams also appeared to score on shots that bounced out so quickly that
the officials judged then to hit the post and did not stop play.
Should McGill win the series, they would advance to a best-of-three series
against the Toronto Varsity Blues, beginning Wednesday at McConnell Arena, with
Games 2 and 3 slated for Varsity Arena next weekend. If Concordia wins the series,
they would play UQTR, while Ottawa, who swept Queens after 2-0- and 1-0
shutouts, would play Toronto.
