Redmen 8 - Concordia 0
OUA East Best-of-three Quarterfinals -- Non-conference Game
Game Report
MONTREAL Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., scored a natural hat-trick
and back-up netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault earned a shutout in his first
career CIS playoff game as No.9-ranked McGill crushed Concordia 8-0 in the third
and deciding game of the OUA East Conference quarterfinals before 823 fans at
McConnell Arena, Sunday.
McGill, which had won the series opener 6-3 and were beaten 6-5 in overtime
of Game 2, advance to a best-of-three semifinal series against the Toronto Varsity
Blues, a team that the Redmen defeated in both meetings this season -- 3-0 at
Varsity Arena and 11-1 at McConnell Arena. That series begins Wednesday at McGill
(7 p.m.) and will shift to Toronto next weekend. The other OUA East semifinal
series will pit Ottawa against UQTR.
As far as post-season games go, the whitewash over Concordia was McGills
second-highest goal output -- and the largest margin of victory -- in the schools
93 playoff games, which date back to 1910. McGill had previously scored nine
goals in a 9-6 win at Concordia in 1988 and in a 9-5 win over Ottawa in 1984.
Their previous most lopsided playoff win had been an 8-1 decision over Ottawa
in 2005.
The Redmen led 2-0 after the opening period and that lead held up until the
final stanza, when McGill exploded for six goals, including five on power-plays,
establishing school playoff records for most power-play goals in a period and
game. They outshot the Stingers 39-28, including an 18-4 edge in the final stanza.
Filiatrault, a management sophomore from Laval, Que., who joined the Redmen
last year from Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, kicked out
all 28 shots he faced en route to registering his first win and shutout in CIS
playoff action. In fact, it was only the second playoff shutout in McGill history
and the first since Feb. 26, 1998, when Jarrod Daniel made 42 saves in a 3-0
win over Concordia. Filiatrault, who led the nation with a 2.07 goals-against
average this season, had posted a 6-2-2 record with a pair of shutouts in 10
starts. Over his two years with McGill, the 6-foot-1, 183-pounder has racked
up an impressive 15-5-3 overall record with eight shutouts.
Six different players scored for McGill, including Shewchuk, who became the
teams third player to notch a hat-trick this season. The 24-year-old chemical
engineering senior extended his point streak to 11 consecutive games, with nine
goals and 12 assists over that span.
Other McGill marksmen included forwards Teddy Kyres (game-winner) of Westmount,
Que., Eric LItalien of Ste. Foy, Que., Sam Bloom of Toronto and Serbian
sophomore Marko Kovacevic, plus third-year defenceman David Urquhart of Thorold,
Ont., who tallied a goal and three assists and now has seven points in his last
two playoff games.
Patrick Lepage made 31 saves in a losing cause for the Stingers, whose fairytale
finish came to an abrupt end after a gallant late-season turn-around to qualify
for the final playoff berth.
REDMEN RAP: Sophomore Louis-Simon Allaire continued his torrid pace with three
assists to give the offensive-minded rearguard points in nine of his last 10
games with a 6-12-18 record over that span
After three playoff games,
a dozen different Redmen have netted goals
A pair of defencemen (Allaire
and Urquhart) lead the teams scoring parade with seven points apiece
Thirteen of McGills 19 post-season goals have been scored in man-advantage
situations and the Redmen PP is operating at an incredible 56.5 success rate
(13-for-23)
On the other side of the ledger, the McGill PK unit has erased
75 per cent of opposition PPs (21-of-28)
The Redmen, who have won seven
straight home games against Concordia, are 11-1-1 in the last 13 meetings with
the Stingers
McGill has now won six of 10 playoff series from Concordia,
with an 11-10 edge in games won
There have been 12 shutouts in the 169
games between these rivals
Concordia had the first five goose-eggs but
McGill has rallied to get the next seven shutouts.
