Redmen 3 - Wilfrid Laurier 2
Non-conference Game
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., scored with 8.2 seconds
remaining in regulation time as McGill rallied with three late goals to edge
Wilfrid Laurier 3-2 in mens pre-season university hockey at McConnell
Arena, Friday.
It was the 132nd season opener for McGill, which is the oldest existing team
in hockey. It also ruined a homecoming of sorts, for Kelly Nobes, the former
McGill star forward and assistant coach now in his second season as bench boss
of the Golden Hawks.
After a scoreless opening period, Laurier took a 2-0 lead in the middle period
on a pair of markers by senior Mark Voakes, at 13:59 and 19:53, respectively.
But the Redmen came to life in the final 12 minutes of the game, starting with
a power play marker from defenceman David Urquhart of Thorold, Ont., who snuck
in from the blueline to score at 7:47.
Urquhart then set up the equalizer by rookie Guillaume Doucet, a 5-foot-9,
180-pound centre from Montreal who played for the PEI Rocket in the QMJHL last
year.
Third-year netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault of Laval, Que., saved 18 of 20
shots to earn the win in relief of senior Mathieu Poitras, who had started the
game and kept the Hawks off the scoresheet with nine saves in 30 minutes, 18
seconds of play.
Jeff MacDougald made 27 saves in a losing cause for Laurier as the Redmen held
a slim 30-29 margin in shots on goal.
McGill will play their next pre-season affair against the UQTR Patriotes on
Sunday in a game that will be played in Bedford, Que., located near St. Jean
sur Richelieu, about 35 minutes south of Montreal. It will be the third straight
year that McGill plays in Bedford to support minor hockey in that farming community.
REDMEN RAP: The Redmen roster features a team record 24 returnees
The
only losses from last season are F Lucas Madill, F Teddy Kyres and F Benoit
Martin, the team captain
Replacing Martin as the new captain is David
Urquhart, a management senior.
