Redmen 3 - UQTR (@ Bedford, Que.) 2 (OT)
Non-conference Game

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

BEDFORD, Que. – Louis-Simon Allaire of Sherbrooke, Que., scored a power play goal at 2:32 of sudden-death overtime as McGill rallied to defeat UQTR 3-2 in men’s preseason hockey Sunday at Bedford, Que., a farming community located just north of the Quebec-Vermont border.

It was the second straight year that McGill played a game in support of the Bedford minor hockey program.

The result marked only McGill’s second lifetime pre-season win against their archrivals from Trois-Rivieres, who wrestled the OUA East conference championship away from McGill last spring.

Allaire, a sophomore who led all McGill defencemen in goals last year with 12, converted a rebound from centre Guillaume Demers.

Thiery Poudrier tallied two power play goals for the Pats, who led 1-0 after one period and 2-1 midway through the middle frame. UQTR, which held a 29-26 edge in shots on net, went 2-for-11 with the man-advantage, while McGill was 1-for-10.

Benoit Arsenault, a sophomore centre from Rimouski, Que., assisted on Len Verrilli’s goal to make it 1-1 at 7:25 of the second period, knotted the score again at 2-2 at 19:21.

The teams played a scoreless third period, largely due to the efforts of senior Redmen goaltender Mathieu Poitras, who came in midway through the second in relief of starter Jean-Michel Filiatrault and kicked aside all 13 shots to earn the victory. Poitras, who won CIS rookie-of-the-year honours in 2004-05 and was an All-Canadian in his sophomore season, has not allowed a goal in two preseason contests. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Laurier, he saved all nine shots directed his way before being replaced by Filiatrault.

McGill (2-0) will close out their preseason schedule with a pair of games in Moncton, Sept. 28-29. The OUA season begins the following week, with McGill hosting Guelph and Brock, Oct. 5-6.
