Redmen 2 - Carleton 3 (OT)
Game Report by David Kent & Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL -- Mike Testa, a sophomore from Ottawa, scored once in regulation
and came up with a post-overtime shootout goal as Carleton stunned the McGill
Redmen in mens hockey, at McConnell Arena, in Montreal, Friday.
McGill outshot the Ravens 39-21 but Doug Jewer, a sophomore goaltender from
St. Johns, Nfld., made 37 saves, plus three more in the shootout, to preserve
the victory.
The upstart Ravens, a new team in the OUA this year, improved to 2-1-1 including
a perfect 2-0 road record.
McGill, on the other hand, failed to win for the third straight contest and
fell to 1-3, including the shootout loss, which is worth a point in the standings.
Carleton played a gritty game against one of the OUA Far East preseason favorites
as they survived a 13-5 disadvantage in shots to escape from the first period
with a scoreless tie.
Testa netted the games first goal at 9:45 of the second period on a pass
from Jared Cipparone, a freshman centre from Tecumseh, Ont.
McGill, however, needed only 24 seconds to score the equalizer when sophomore
Benoit Arsenault of Rimouski, Que., netted his second of the season.
It appeared that McGill had the game in hand when rookie Evan Vossen of Swift
Current, Sask., made it 2-1 for the Redmen with 5:35 remaining in the third
period but rookie Justin Caruana of Orono, Ont., forced a five-minute overtime
with his third of the season at 18:03.
After a scoreless OT session, Testa, the third Carleton player to shoot in
penalty shots, scored the lone shootout goal, deking McGill netminder Jean-Michel
Filiatrault.
Jewer thwarted all three Redmen shooters (Marko Kovacevic, Arsenault and Sam
Bloom) to preserve the win.
McGill will now focus on trying to snap their three-game skid when they travel
down the hill to the Bell Centre for the 21st annual Ronald Corey Cup game,
a non-conference affair for university hockey supremacy in Montreal.
Tickets are only $10 and organizers are hoping to draw over 10,000 fans to
the event. The Quebec attendance record for a single university game is 12,000
to see the 1968 University Cup final between Alberta and Loyola.
That same year, there was another game, between Loyola and Sir George Williams,
which drew 19,000 at the Forum but that was part of a doubleheader, which included
a game between the Junior Canadiens and the Toronto Marlies.
