McGill TO MEET STINGERS AT BELL CENTRE FOR 21st ANNUAL COREY CUP CLASH

MONTREAL -- The McGill Redmen and Concordia Stingers will meet in the 21st annual Ronald Corey Cup game at the Bell Centre on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.

Tickets for the Corey Cup, an annual challenge match for university hockey supremacy in Montreal, are now on sale for $10 dollars, if purchased in advance at either institution. They are available at the McGill Redbird Sports Shop, 475 Pine Avenue W. or at the Concordia Department of Recreation and Athletics, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W.

The game, which will also close out Homecoming Week on the McGill campus, marks the second time this season that the Redmen will play in a National Hockey League Arena. McGill, in the midst of their 132nd season, is also slated to faceoff against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Scotiabank Place on Nov. 3.

Although it marks the first time that the Corey Cup classic will be held in the newest home of the Montreal Canadiens, it won’t be the first time that the Sherbrooke Street rivals played for the Cup in an NHL arena.

From 1989 to 1994, the Redmen and Stingers clashed for the Cup for six consecutive years at the old Montreal Forum.

McGill leads the Corey Cup series with a 9-6-3 record, while Concordia is 7-10-3 and UQTR is 1-1-0. In 168 lifetime games between the two archrivals, Concordia leads the all-time series with an 87-67-14 record, outscoring the Redmen by a 741-612 margin. The Redmen, however, own an 11-1-1 record in their last 13 meetings against the Singers.

Ronald Corey, then president and governor of the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens, donated the Cup in 1988. With over 60,000 students enrolled at the two institutions, organizers are hoping for a turnout of over 10,000, which would establish a record for a university hockey game in Quebec.
