Redmen 5 - UQTR 3
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Sophomore Vincent Lambert of Ste. Therese, Que., scored twice,
including the game-winner, as McGill knocked off No.10-ranked UQTR 5-3 in mens
hockey at McConnell Arena, Tuesday.
The victory snapped a four-game losing skid for the Redmen and improved their
record to 2-4-0, including an overtime shootout loss. The second-place Pats
dropped to 3-2-0 with an overtime loss.
UQTR had a 36-26 edge in shots, including a 10-3 margin in the third period
but McGill netminder Mathieu Poitras, a senior from Gatineau, Que., came up
with a solid 33-save effort, improving his record to 2-2-0.
Chris Churchill-Smith of Westmount, Que., and Benoit Arsenault of Rimouski,
Que., scored 41 seconds apart early in the first period to give McGill a quick
2-0 lead but the Patriotes charged back a minute later with a pair of goals
only 46 seconds apart from Jonathan Boutin and Keven Petit.
Simon Courcelles, a freshman from Rosemere, Que., who won the Memorial Cup
with the Quebec Remparts in 2006, gave McGill a 3-2 lead with a power play marker
at 16:51.
The Redmen jumped into a commanding 5-2 lead when Lambert tallied twice in
the middle period. The Pats rounded out the scoring on a goal by Frederic St-Denis
at 4:56 of the third period.
McGill, which is 2-1 against the Pats this year including a pre-season win,
have now won seven straight home games from their arch-rivals since a 2-1 overtime
loss on Oct. 25, 2003.
The Redmen have two games in Ottawa this weekend. They play at Carleton on
Friday night and will take on the Gee-Gees at Scotiabank Place on Saturday afternoon
(2 pm), prior to the Bruins-Senators game. Tickets, which are $6.50 for children
12 years old and younger and $8.50 for adults, are available at the Redbird
Sportshop (514-398-7000 ext. 1539) or through www.capitaltickets.ca (613-599-FANS
or 877-788-FANS).
REDMEN RAP: McGill left winger Guillaume Demers, who was almost a pre-game
lineup scratch, came up with a solid two-assist performance. The third-year
management student from Baie Comeau, Que., had spent the day in Toronto, where
he had lined up five job interviews. He arrived back at McConnell Arena only
25 minutes before the opening face-off and missed the pre-game warm-up
Former McGill captain Mathieu Darche will be wearing No.21 on the Oct. 31 TSN
broadcast of the Tampa-New Jersey game
It will mark his first time on
national TV in Canada
Darche, who played for the Redmen from 1996 to 2000,
was advised on Oct. 26 by Lightning GM Jay Feaster, that he can start looking
for a house, which means he has finally made an NHL roster from the start of
a season
In 10 games with the Lightning this season, Darche has a 1-3-4
record, giving him a career total of 2-4-6 in 38 NHL games, including stints
with Columbus, Nashville and San Jose.
