Redmen 4 - Carleton 1

Game Report by David Kent

The McGill University Redmen defeated the Carleton University Ravens, 4-1, in OUA Far East Men’s Ice Hockey action, at Carleton University’s Ice House. The Ravens record falls to 3-4-1 in the Far East, good for 7-points.

The Ravens and Redmen played an excellent game with both teams having numerous scoring chances in the first period, the Ravens out shot McGill, 12-8 in the first period, the Redmen goaltender Mathieu Poitras, Gatineau, Quebec kept the Ravens from scoring with several key saves until Carleton’s Gabriel Perreault, Mattawa, Ontario, scored the game’s first goal at the 18th minute on a pass from Ian Greene, Ottawa, Ontario.

The Redmen came out strong in the second period but veteran Raven goaltender, Doug Jewer, St. John’s, Newfoundland was up to the task making 13 saves in the period. The Redmen kept the pressure on Carleton’s defence and tied the game on a Steven Pearce, Fredericton, NB at the nine minute mark. Both teams traded shots at the two goaltenders but they stood their ground going into the second intermission tied at one.

In the third McGill scored two quick goals in the first three minutes of the period by Shawn Shewchuk, Lloydminster, Alberta and Guillaume Doucet, Montreal, PQ to give the Redmen a two-goal lead. The Ravens offence tried to get Carleton back into the game, but McGill kept the Ravens from getting any closer. The Redmen would score an empty net goal in the final minute, as Carleton’s Head Coach Fred Parker pulled Jewer for the extra skater in an attempt to score late in the game.
