Redmen 5 - Carleton 1

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – Freshman Simon Courcelles of Rosemere, Que., netted his first career hat-trick as McGill skated to a 5-1 win over Carleton in men’s university hockey at McConnell Arena, Tuesday.

It marked the fourth straight victory for the Redmen (5-3-0-1) after getting off to an uncharacteristic 1-3-0-1 start to the season, including an overtime shootout loss to the Ravens on Oct. 19.

The McGill power play, which has strayed in different directions this year, finally found its way home after clicking its heels three times in 11 chances as Carleton continually shot itself in the foot with penalties. The Ravens ended up playing shorthanded for 15 minutes and 17 seconds.

McGill outshot the upstart Ravens 39-18, including a lopsided 21-2 margin in the second period, but found themselves trailing 1-0 after the opening period when Carleton’s Adam Marriner notched a power play goal at 4:38. It was the third time in as many meetings that the Ravens had scored first against McGill.

But the Redmen roared back with five unanswered goals, including three in the middle stanza by Courcelles, senior Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., and sophomore Guillaume Demers of Baie Comeau, Que.

Courcelles, who captained the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL last year, tallied twice in the final period. The 5-foot-8, 200-pound centre leads the Redmen in goals and has a 6-2-8 record in nine contests. He didn’t have much time to celebrate the hat-trick though, as he was mugged on the play by a frustrated Elliott McCormack, who was tossed from the contest for his checking-to-the-head penalty with just over three minutes remaining.

Goaltender Mathieu Poitras, a senior from Gatineau, Que., made 17 saves for the win. With his last two victories, he now owns a 67-29-6 lifetime record in a McGill jersey, including 44-14-6 in regular season play. Both win totals bettered the previous McGill records set by Jamie Reeve (61-45-8 overall, 42-30-0 in league play) from 1985 to 1990.

McGill travels to Kingston on Saturday for their only road-trip against Queen’s this season. The Gaels are promoting that contest as their annual "Kill McGill" game and a large crowd is expected for the event, which is scheduled for a late 8:30 p.m. faceoff at the 3,000-seat Kingston Memorial Centre. The game will be aired on CFRC and can be heard over the Internet at www.cfrc.ca. McGill is 100-50-2 lifetime against Queen’s in a rivalry that dates back to 1895 and is the second-longest in hockey history (after the Queen’s-RMC series which began in 1886).

REDMEN RAP: Guillaume Demers extended his point-scoring streak to five straight contests… Team captain and All-Canadian rearguard David Urquhart was kept out of the lineup with a hand injury… Senior Shawn Shewchuk had three points in the game and has taken over the Redmen points lead with 4-6-10 in nine league games… Third-year forward Sam Bloom had three assists and is tied for third in the points race with 1-5-6… Senior Eric L’Italien picked up an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to three games… Since returning to the lineup after missing the first 11 games (including pre-season), the speedy winger from Ste. Foy, Que., has 3-3-6 in three contests... Former McGill captain Mathieu Darche cleared the NHL waiver wire on Tuesday, making way for his reassignment to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. Darche, a 6-foot-1, 217-pound left wing from Montreal, posted a goal and three assists in his first 13 games with the Lightning.
