Redmen 4 - Ryerson 2
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Freshman Simon Courcelles of Rosemere, Que., scored twice and
set up another as McGill skated to their eighth consecutive win with a 4-2 home-ice
decision over Ryerson in mens university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was also McGills 12th straight conquest over Ryerson, who havent
beaten the Redmen since a 5-2 decision on Nov. 9, 2001.
Shawn Shewchuk set up all four Redmen goals and extended his torrid point-scoring
streak to eight games. The chemical engineering senior from Lloydminster, Alta.,
has four goals and 13 assists in that span and has now moved into fifth place
among OUA scoring leaders with a 5-16-21 record in 13 contests.
All-Canadian netminder Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 26 saves in
his ninth consecutive start and upped his record to 9-2-0 in OUA play this year.
Defencemen Louis-Simon Allaire and Ben Gazdic rounded out the scoring for McGill,
which outshot the Rams 34-28 in a game that featured 108 minutes in penalties,
including 61 to Ryerson. The Redmen went 2-for-8 on the power play, marking
the teams sixth consecutive game with multiple PPGs.
Gazdic netted the eventual game-winner with a seeing-eye shot, through a forest
of legs, from the blueline to put McGill ahead 3-0 just over three minutes into
the final period. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore from Toronto, who only had
two assists in nine games last year, has already surpassed that total with a
3-2-5 record in 13 contests.
The Rams rallied with a pair of third period goals from Louis Santelli and
Brent Small at 4:07 and 10:12, respectively. But Courcelles came to the rescue
with an insurance marker three minutes later with his second of the night and
ninth of the season. The 5-foot-8, 200-pound sparkplug then came to the aid
of teammate Sam Bloom, who was attacked after a minor collision with Rams goaltender
Paul Gibson behind the net. Courcelles, who leads the Redmen in goals and is
second in points (15), got into an altercation with 6-foot-3, 210-pound Anthony
Pototschnik. Both were ejected for fighting and will receive automatic one-game
suspensions.
Ryerson, which dropped to 2-7-3, will play their third game in three days with
an afternoon affair in Ottawa, Sunday.
McGill (9-3-1) maintained their tie with Concordia (9-4-1) for second-place
in the OUA Far East. The bitter cross-town rivals will meet for the first time
in league play when the Stingers visit McConnell Arena, Wednesday. The teams
did clash in the Corey Cup contest, a non-conference encounter at the Bell Centre
on Oct. 21, where the two teams racked up 110 penalty minutes and McGill came
away with a 3-1 win before 5,406 fans.
REDMEN RAP: The eight-game win streak by McGill is the teams longest
in intercollegiate play since in 1936-37, when they went undefeated with a 10-0
record
The teams overall record win streak, which includes non-varsity
games, is 17 games from Dec. 9, 1936 to Feb. 6, 1937
Team captain and All-Canadian
defenceman David Urquhart missed his fifth straight game with a broken knuckle
and is expected to miss another couple of games before returning to the lineup.
