Redmen 5 - Concordia 3

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – Guillaume Demers of Baie Comeau, Que., scored twice and added an assist as No.9-ranked McGill skated to their ninth consecutive victory with a 5-3 come-from-behind affair over Concordia in men’s university hockey at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.

The win streak is McGill’s longest since 1936-37, when they went undefeated with 10-0 record in the International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey League.

It also helped move the Redmen into a first-place tie with UQTR. Both teams sit atop the OUA Far East standings with identical 10-3-1 records, two points ahead of Concordia (9-5-1).

McGill held a one-sided 39-18 territorial edge in shots over the Stingers, including a 13-3 differential in the middle period. The win improved McGill’s record to 13-1-1 in their last 15 meetings versus Concordia.

Senior netminder Mathieu Poitras made his 11th consecutive start and recorded 15 saves, improving to 10-2-0. He leads all OUA goalies and is tied for second among CIS leaders in wins. Patrick Lepage took the loss between the pipes for Concordia and fell to 5-4-1.

The Stingers led 1-0 after one period on a goal by Nicolas Lafontaine but the Redmen awoke in the middle frame with a pair of goals only 40 seconds apart from defenceman Louis-Simon Allaire on the power play at 5:48 and the aforementioned Demers at 6:28.

On the latter goal, Demers, a third-year centre, won a faceoff deep in McGill territory, and raced the length of the ice to score shorthanded on a breakaway.

Concordia tied the game in the third period on a goal by Gabriel Boies at 6:42 but the Redmen jumped into a 4-2 lead with another pair of quick goals at 7:57 and 8:49 from sophomore Vincent Lambert of Ste. Therese, Que., and rookie Guillaume Doucet of Montreal, respectively. Doucet’s marker, his third of the season, proved to be the game-winner.

The Stingers narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the final stanza on Trevor Blanchard’s slapper from the top of the faceoff circle but Demers put the game out of reach at 15:45 when he converted a pass from senior Eric L’Italien to tally his sixth goal of the season.

L’Italien, a native of Ste. Foy, Que., who graduated in his junior year and returned this season to study law, had three assists in the game.

Concordia, which had entered the contest with the No.1 power play in the 16-team OUA, went 0-for- 5 and coughed up a shorthanded goal to McGill, which leads the league in penalty-killing at 91.1 per cent.

McGill will close out the first semester this weekend in Toronto and with a pair of victories, can break the school record for consecutive wins in intercollegiate play. They take on the Ryerson Rams (2-8-3) on Friday and the U of T Varsity Blues, Saturday. McGill has won 12 straight games over Ryerson, who haven’t beaten the Redmen since Nov. 9, 2001. In the last 25 meetings against the Varsity Blues, McGill is 16-5-4.

REDMEN RAP: McGill has surrendered the first goal in eight of their 14 games but have rallied to win five of them… Allaire’s goal extended his point streak to four games with a 3-3-6 record in that span… He is ranked seventh among OUA rearguards in points with 4-6-10 in 14 games… Redmen points leader Shawn Shewchuk was kept off the scoresheet, putting an end to his eight-game point streak… Rookie Simon Courcelles, who leads the Redmen with nine goals, sat out an automatic one-game suspension against Concordia as the result of his fighting major incurred last week against Ryerson… He was replaced in the lineup by freshman Simon Marcotte, a high-scoring recruit out of the Quebec Jr. AAA league, who had missed the first 13 Redmen games with a leg injury. Marcotte’s debut was short-lived, however, when he was ejected in the first period after a hit-from-behind minor penalty.
