Redmen 8 - Ryerson 3
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
TORONTO Guillaume Demers of Baie Comeau, Que., scored a hat-trick, including
a shorthanded marker as visiting McGill dumped Ryerson 8-3 in mens university
hockey, Friday.
It was the 10th straight victory for the No.9-ranked Redmen, matching the team
record for intercollegiate play, established in 1936-37. That same season, McGill
actually had a 19-game win streak, including games played in the Quebec Senior
Hockey League. It was also McGills 13th consecutive win over Ryerson,
dating back to 2001.
Demers, a 5-foot-10, 183-pound centre, has notched six points in his last two
contests, including a pair of shorthanded goals. He was credited with the eventual
game-winner after giving McGill a commanding 4-1 lead at the 17-second mark
of the middle period.
Senior Eric LItalien of Ste. Foy, Que., and freshman Simon Courcelles
of Rosemere, Que., each added a goal and two assists. It was the second straight
three-point game for LItalien, while Courcelles, who returned to the lineup
after serving an automatic one-game suspension, extended his point streak to
six consecutive games. He has seven goals and 13 points during that span and
ranks second on the team in points with a 10-8-18 record in 14 contests.
Other McGill marksmen included Marko Kovacevic, a native of Belgrade, who tallied
his first of the season, and Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., who netted
his sixth.
Senior netminder Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 28 saves for the win,
improving his record to 11-2-0 on the season and 73-29-6 in a McGill jersey.
The Redmen outshot Ryerson 43-31 as the power play continued to produce with
three markers in eight chances. McGill has scored 47.5 per cent of its 59 goals
on special teams, including 26 on the powerplay and two shorthanded.
Replying for Ryerson was Josh McNair (9th), Brent Small 95th) and Louis Santelli
(5th).
The cellar-dwelling Rams dropped to 2-10-3 in the OUA Far East, while McGill
kept pace with UQTR, who beat RMC 3-2 in Kingston, Friday. Both teams sit atop
the OUA Far East with identical 11-3-1 records.
McGill will close out the road trip and their first semester, when they take
on the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-8-1), Saturday at 7 p.m. They beat the Blues
3-2 last week and are 16-5-4 in the last 25 match-ups.
REDMEN RAP: Team captain David Urquhart, an All-Canadian rearguard from Thorold,
Ont., returned to the lineup earlier than scheduled. The management senior had
missed six games with a broken knuckle suffered during a game in Ottawa on Nov.

Defenceman Louis-Simon Allaire saw his four-game point-scoring streak
end.
