Redmen 2 - Toronto 5
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
U of T gives Redmen the Blues, end magical streak
TORONTO Rookie Anthony Pallotta scored power play and shorthanded goals,
his 12th and 13th markers of the season and veteran Joe Rand added a pair of
empty-net goals in the final minute as the U of T Varsity Blues upset ninth-ranked
McGill 5-2 in mens hockey, Saturday.
The loss ended McGills magical win streak at 10 consecutive games in
intercollegiate league play, matching the school record set in 1936-37.
Brendan Sherrard also hit paydirt for the Blues, who sit third in the OUA Mid
East at 7-8-1.
The Redmen had a 44-22 edge in shots, including a 21-7 margin in the middle
stanza, but were stoned time and time again by Russ Brownell, a 5-foot-11, 167-pound
rookie netminder from Oakville.
Despite entering the game with one of the leagues most potent power play
units, McGill was unable to connect on any of their six man-advantage opportunities,
a carbon copy of their playoff series loss to Toronto last spring. In fact,
they even gave up a shorthanded goal late in the second period, which gave the
Blues a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore forward Vincent Lambert of Ste. Therese, Que., and Yan Turcotte,
a defenceman from Laval, Que., scored for McGill, who will enter the December
exam break second in the OUA East Division with an 11-4-1 record, two points
behind UQTR (12-3-1) and four ahead of Concordia (9-7-1). The Redmen are 15-6-0
overall and scheduled to depart after Christmas for a tournament in Belgrade,
Serbia before resuming league play on Jan.12 with a road game against University
of Ontario Institute of Technology, a new OUA team based in Oshawa.
REDMEN RAP: Five members of the Redmen are averaging at least a point per game...
Senior Shawn Shewchuk leads the team in points and is ranked seventh in the
OUA with a 6-18-24 record in 18 games... Rookie Simon Courcelles, who has 18
points including a team--leading 10 goals (5 PPGs), was kept off the scoresheet
and his point-scoring streak ended at six games... Junior Guillaume Demers,
who leads the team with a pair of shorthanded goals, picked up one assist and
is now third in the team points race with 9-7-16 in 16 contests...Junior Sam
Bloom has 4-12-16 while senior Eric LItalien has 4-11-15 in 10 contests
after missing the first few weeks with an injured groin.
