Redmen 7 - Serbian Selects (at Belgrade, Serbia) 3
Vojvodina Intl Celebration of Hockey Tournament -- Non-conference Game
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
BELGRADE, Serbia Seven different players scored for McGill as the Redmen
defeated a team of Serbian Selects 7-3 in the opening game of the Vojvodina
International Celebration of Hockey Tournament at Pionir Arena in Belgrade,
Saturday.
Back-up netminder Jake Jarvis, a junior from Toronto made 15 saves in a rare
start, to register his first career victory in a McGill jersey as the Redmen
outshot their hosts by a 23-18 margin.
McGill, playing their first game in 28 days as a result of the end of semester
exam break, got goals from Chris Churchill-Smith, Sam Bloom, freshman Simon
Courcelles, Eric LItalien (game-winner; shorthanded), Mathieu Leclerc
(power play), defenceman Ken Morin and Jeremy Burgess.
After a shaky first period, Jarvis appeared to gain confidence as the game
wore on, coming up with a number of key saves. Fortunately, one puck which he
didnt have to stop, was at the 2:13 mark of the second period when a total
power failure occurred, just after a blistering slapshot was unleashed from
the blueline. As the arena fell into complete darkness, McGill defenceman Ben
Gazdic, a sophomore from Toronto, blocked the shot blindly. I saw the
guy shoot, then everything went black, said Jarvis. For a brief second,
I thought that I had passed out.
It was fun... nice to get my first win but it doesnt compare,
said the 20-year-old management junior. selected as the games first star,
when asked how it compared to seeing the Led Zeppelin reunion tour live in England
a few weeks ago. I have to admit that the show was way better.
Jarvis was one of 20,000 fans worldwide to win a lottery for the right to purchase
tickets -- at $250 each -- to see the legendary rock band play a concert which
drew rave reviews from the music critics, at Londons O2 Arena on Dec.
10. Over one million fans had entered the lottery and Jarvis spent $1,000, including
airfare, hotel and meals, to see the event live between two of his final exams
which were scheduled around the extravaganza.
I wrote one exam on Dec. 7, attended the Redmen team Christmas party
on the eighth, flew to London on the ninth, saw the concert on the 10th and
flew back to Montreal the next day, in time for my exam on Dec. 12, said
the Zeppelin fanatic, who once bought a similar guitar to the one used by lead
guitarist Jimmy Page.
The Redmen will play another Serbian all-star team on Sunday in Novi Sad, the
countrys second-largest city and capital of the northern Serbian province
of Vojvodina. The five-team tournament, which is being co-hosted by four cities
over a seven-day period, them moves to Hungary.
GAME NOTES: The Serbian Selects featured former McGill rearguard Daniel Jacob
in their lineup... The team, a selection of key Serbian players earmarked for
the IIHF World Group B Championship tourney in Romania next spring, and imports
from the Serbian league, was coached by Toronto native Mike Brewer, son of former
NHL defenceman Carl Brewer. His assistant coach was Fred Perowne, orginally
from Sherbrooke and a son of former Montreal Alouettes player Ron Perowne, Jr.,
whos father was inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
