Vojvodina Intl Celebration of Hockey Tournament — Non-conference Game

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

Poitras shines as Redmen defeat Serb all-stars 3-1

NOVI SAD, Serbia – Goaltender Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., saved 24 of 25 shots and three different McGill players scored as the Redmen hockey team came away with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Vojvodina-Novi Sad Selects, Sunday.

Defenceman Dave Urquhart of Thorold, Ont., and centre Guillaume Demers of Baie Comeau, Que., gave the Redmen a 2-0 lead at 5:50 of the first and 2:28 of the second period, respectively.

Serbia’s Boris Gabric made it 2-1 at 8:08 of the middle of the second period and the game remained tight until the final minutes when Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., tallied an insurance marker.

Two former Redmen — defenceman Daniel Jacob of Quebec City and goaltender Murray Cobb, a native of Roxboro, Que.,
suited up for the Serbian all-star squad, which featured a mix of the top pros from Vojvodina and Novi Sad, two local teams.

The win improved McGill’s record to 2-0 in this week-long event, known as the Vojvodina International Celebration of Hockey Tournament, which features five teams playing in four different cities on both sides of the Serbian border with Hungary. McGill is scheduled to play Dunaujvaros, a pro Hungarian team on Jan.3 and UTE in Budapest, Jan. 4, before returning Jan. 5.

GAME NOTES: Gavin Ross, honorary president of the Friends of McGill Hockey alumni support group, performed the pre-game ceremonial faceoff with former McGill captain Dan Jacob and current Redmen player Marko Kovacevic, a native of Serbia… Player-coach Fred Perowne, grandson of McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductee Ron Perowne, assisted on the lone goal scored by the Serbian team… A former player from Colby College in Maine, Perowne is working on a master’s degree at Royal Rhodes University in Victoria, B.C., focusing on how sport helps ease the tensions in post-conflict war zones… Prior to the McGill game, he helped organize an international minor hockey tourney involving teams from the Balkan region… McGill head coach Martin Raymond and the Redmen have been holding instructional hockey clinics, every other day, for local minor hockey groups and arranged for the donation and shipping of 25 bags of hockey equipment to Serbian minor hockey.
