By Earl Zukerman
DUNAUJVAROS, Hungary Marek Klacansky scored with 2:02 remaining as Dunaujvaros,
a professional Hungarian mens hockey team, edged the McGill Redmen 2-1,
Thursday.
The teams battled through a scoreless first period before Akos Kiss gave the
Steel Bulls a 1-0 lead only 49 seconds into the middle stanza. McGills
Eric LItalien, a senior from Ste. Foy, Que., tied the score with a shorthanded
effort at 11:39 of the final period.
The Redmen have a 2-1 record in the International Celebration of Hockey Tournament,
including a pair of 7-3 and 3-1 victories over Serbian all-star teams. They
will close out their four-game overseas tour against Ujpesti Torna Egylet, another
pro club team better known as UTE, in Budapest on Friday.
GAME NOTES: Both coaches agreed to play a shootout after the game, regardless
of the result
The Steel Bulls won the shootout 3-2 on goals by Akos Kiss,
Imre Peterde and Laszlo Orso
McGill goals were tallied by Marko Kovacevic
and defenceman Ben Gazdic
Other Redmen who participated in the shootout
but failed to score included Simon Marcotte, Sam Bloom, Mathieu Leclerc and
Simon Courcelles
Following the post-game handshakes, each Hungarian player
mysteriously wiped their hands on the ice surface, then they were showered by
chocolate candy bars thrown from the stands
In the pre-game warm-up, McGill
wore their white jerseys with red trim, while Dunaujvaros wore their red jerseys
with white trim
However, the game officials requested that the teams change,
so McGill came out for the first period with their reds, while the home team
wore their whites with black & red trim
The home team also had a formal
set of numbers on their game socks.... The game was officiated by two referees
and two linesmen, marking the first time that McGill had ever played in a game
with the four-man system.
