Redmen 4 - Concordia (Carnival Game; webcast live) 1
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., set up three goals as
No.9-ranked McGill conquered Concordia 4-1, before a Winter Carnival Week crowd
of 890 in mens university hockey at McConnell Arena, Monday.
The Redmen, who outshot the Stingers 44-24, won for the 12th time in their
last 14 league games and improved to 13-4-1, while the Stingers fell to 9-10-1.
It was also McGills fourth straight win over Concordia and improved their
record to 14-1-1 in the last 16 confrontations with their cross-town rivals.
In a game that featured 102 minutes in penalties, the Redmen survived a rocky
start, killing off four consecutive minors in the first 10 minutes, including
a couple of two-man disadvantages and escaping with a scoreless opening period.
McGill came out firing on all cylinders in the middle stanza as Shewchuk set
up power play goals by Sam Bloom of Toronto, Yan Turcotte, a defenceman from
Laval, Que., and Simon Courcelles, the freshman from Rosemere, Que., who leads
the team with an impressive 13 markers, including eight on the power play, in
just 17 games.
Shewchuk leads the Redmen in points with a 6-21-27 record. He now ranks second
among league assist leaders.
Simon-Pierre Sauvé gave the Stingers a brief life after breaking a shutout
bid by McGill netminder Mathieu Poitras with a power play goal to make it 3-1
late in the second period.
But McGill iced the contest when Serbian sophomore Marko Kovacevic beat besieged
Stingers netminder Maxime Joyal on a breakaway at 3:03 of the final period.
Special teams play went exceptionally well for the Redmen who were 3-for-8
on the power play and killed off eight of nine manpower disadvantages. McGill
owns the third-best PP in the 18-team OUA, scoring on 24.1 percent of their
chances (32 of 133). The Redmen have the second-best penalty-killing unit in
the league, snuffing out 105 of 117 situations for an 89.7 kill rate.
Tempers flared after that and fighting majors were assessed to McGill sophomore
Vincent Lambert and Concordia rookie Nicolas Sciangula, who drew an additional
penalty for instigating, which carries an automatic two-game suspension. Lamberts
major means he will miss Fridays visit from Queens, an affair that
is expected be another sellout crowd.
REDMEN RAP: The game was webcast live, a first for the Redmen hockey team,
through a link on the McGill Athletics website (www.athletics.mcgill.ca) and
among those watching was former McGill forward Lucas Madill, who graduated last
spring and is now completing a graduate degree at UNB, where he is playing for
the defending national champs
The webcast went fairly smoothly and it
appears that Fridays home game vs. Queens will also be webcast,
with a 6:55 pm air time.
