Stingers show discipline in victory over Redmen
Defenceman Beauchamp scores twice as team puts emotion aside
by RANDY PHILLIPS, The Gazette
Concordia found out how good a hockey team it can be yesterday.
Exercising what head coach Kevin Figsby called "intelligence over emotion,"
the Stingers were near-flawless in a 3-1 win over the No. 9-ranked McGill Redmen
in a key OUA Far East Division game at Concordia's Ed Meagher Arena.
Defenceman Brett Beauchamp scored twice in the second period to erase a 1-0
McGill lead, and captain Trevor Blanchard added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds
left in the game as Concordia defeated its cross-town rival for the first time
in three regular-season games and after losing 4-1 less than a week ago.
"That is about as good as it gets," said Figsby after seeing his
team win for the second time in less than 24 hours to move into third place
in the division, one point up on Ottawa and Carleton, which the Stingers defeated
5-2 Friday.
"That was the best game we've played all season, and there's no secret
to it," Figsby said. "You've got to play your best when you're playing
the best. Our game plan today was intelligence over emotion."
McGill beat Concordia 5-3 on Nov. 28, one of 13 wins in its previous 14 games,
and hooked up with the Stingers for the second time in six days after a 10-1
rout of the Queen's Golden Gaels the night before.
The Redmen, playing without third-year centre Sam Bloom, their fourth-leading
scorer who suffered a concussion against Queen's, grabbed a 1-0 lead at 14:51
of the first period when forward Evan Vossen got the puck past Stingers goalie
Maxime Joyal during a goal-mouth scramble.
But that was all McGill would get against the Stingers, who arguably took a
page from the Redmen by skating hard, creating opportunities, getting solid
goaltending and, most important, staying disciplined.
"We had to stay out of the penalty box," Figsby said. "We made
some adjustments to our power play and penalty kill, but we knew we had to stay
out of the penalty box.
Both teams were only penalized four times and both went 0-for-3 on the power
play. Figsby served up a pre-game reminder of playing intelligent by showing
the team film of the first period of the loss at McGill last Monday.
"We played the first period (0-0) of that game with intelligence and we
saw what we could do," Figsby said. "Then I held up the scoresheet
and said: 'Here's what happens when we play with emotion.' They saw all the
penalties we took in that game. So that was the message today."
Beauchamp said the win showed the team is capable of beating any team by being
disciplined and through hard work for 60 minutes.
"It's a big win for us, especially with the playoffs right around the
corner," said Beauchamp, a second-year player from Montreal.
