Redmen 4 - Concordia 1

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – The No.10-ranked McGill Redmen scored a single-game school record of three shorthanded goals, two of them by sophomore Benoit Arsenault of Rimouski, Que., en route to a 4-1 road victory over Concordia at the Ed Meagher Arena, Wednesday.

The win snapped McGill’s two-game losing streak and avenged a 3-1 setback at Concordia on Jan. 19. It also improved the Redmen record to 15-2-1 in the last 18 confrontations with their cross-town rivals.

Arsenault scored at 16:06 of the opening stanza and made it 2-0 at 1:01 of the middle period. His two “shorties” also tied the team’s individual single-game record held by numerous players.

Guillaume Demers, a third-year centre from Baie Comeau, Que., tallied the other shorthanded marker eight minutes later to give the Redmen a commanding 3-0 lead.

The previous school record for most shorthanded goals by the team in a game was two, accomplished 10 times in McGill history – the last time occurring on Feb. 5, 2000.

The Redmen penalty-killing unit has now struck gold five times this season and is in a four-way tie for the league lead in SHGs with Concordia, Brock and Waterloo.

Defenceman Eric Begin of St. Lambert, Que., scored the lone Stingers goal on the power play (at 8:47 of the third), where they went 1-for-10 and ended up minus-2 while playing with a man advantage.

Shawn Shewchuk of Lloydminster, Alta., rounded out the scoring for McGill at 14:52 of the final period. He continues to lead the Redmen in points with 7-24-31 in 24 contests.

McGill outshot Concordia 31-26 as veteran netminder Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 25 saves and improved to 14-4-0. Concordia newcomer Maxime Joyal was credited with 27 saves and dropped to 1-3-0.

With four games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen improved to 16-7-1 in the OUA Far East, one point behind first-place UQTR (17-5-1) and 10 points ahead of Concordia, which dropped to 11-12-1.

McGill will host Royal Military College (10-13-2) and Ottawa (11-11-2) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. RMC is guided by rookie coach Adam Shell, a former McGill defenceman and assistant coach. Shell managed to pull off a stunning 2-1 upset over Martin Raymond and the Redmen in their previous meeting on Jan. 26 in Kingston.

REDMEN RAP: The McGill hockey team officially turns 132 years old on Jan. 31… They were founded on that date in 1877… Sam Bloom, who was playing his second straight game after sitting out three contests due to a concussion, had one assist… They Redmen have scored 42 of their 93 goals on special teams, including a league-leading 37 on the power play.
