McGill hockey team celebrates 131st birthday Jan31 Jan 30, 08 Ice Hockey (M)

MONTREAL -- The McGill University men’s hockey team will celebrate their
131st birthday on January 31.
The Redmen, currently the No. 10 ranked team in Canadian university hockey
with a 15-7-1 second-place record in the OUA Far East will play at Concordia,
Wednesday, who sits fourth in the division at 11-11-1.
After the mid-week game, McGill will then host RMC and Ottawa on Friday (Feb.
1) and Saturday (Feb. 2), respectively.
Students from the Montreal-based university were instrumental in the origins
and development of hockey. They founded the world’s first organized hockey
club and played their first game on Jan. 31, 1877, according to an article published
in the Feb. 1, 1877 edition of the now defunct McGill University Gazette.
That first contest was a challenge game played between McGill and the "Victorias"
-- an amalgamation of members of Montreal’s old Victoria Skating Rink,
bolstered with players from the Montreal Lacrosse Club and the Montreal Football
Club. The historic game, which ended in a 2-1 victory for McGill, was played
at the Victoria Rink, bordered by Drummond Street, Boulevard de Maisonneuve
and Dorchester Street (now Boulevard René Levesque). A National car rental
agency is currently in that location.
That 1877 McGill team was founded two years after the first organized game
was played -- one involving a number of McGill students -- on March 3, 1875
at the Victoria rink. The 1877 game between McGill and the "Victorias"
was played under rules (see below) published in The (Montreal) Gazette on Feb.
27, 1877.
1877 RULES OF ICE HOCKEY
(Ed. Note: the word "Bully" refers to a face-off and the word "game"
generally refers to a "goal").
1. The game shall be commenced and renewed by a Bully in the centre of the
ground. Goals shall be changed after each game.
2. When a player hits the ball, any one of the same side who at such moment
of hitting is nearer to the opponents' goal line is out of play, and may not
touch the ball himself, or in any way whatever prevent any other player from
doing so, until the ball has been played. A player must always be on his own
side of the ball.
3. The ball may be stopped, but not carried or knocked on by any part of the
body. No player shall raise his stick above his shoulder. Charging from behind,
tripping, collaring, kicking or shinning shall not be allowed.
4. When the ball is hit behind the goal line by the attacking side, it shall
be brought out straight 15 yards, and started again by a Bully; but, if hit
behind by any one of the side whose goal line it is, a player of the opposite
side shall hit it out from within one yard of the nearest corner, no player
of the attacking side at that time shall be within 20 yards of the goal line,
and the defenders, with the exception of the goal-keeper, must be behind their
goal line.
5. When the ball goes off at the side, a player of the opposite side to that
which hit it out shall roll it out from the point on the boundary line at which
it went off at right angles with the boundary line, and it shall not be in play
until it has touched the ice, and the player rolling it in shall not play it
until it has been played by another player, every player being then behind the
ball.
6. On the infringement of any of the above rules, the ball shall be brought
back and a Bully shall take place.
7. All disputes shall be settled by the Umpires, or in the event of their disagreement,
by the Referee.

L’équipe de hockey de l’Université McGill célèbre
son 131e anniversaire

MONTRÉAL – L’équipe masculine de hockey de l’Université
McGill a célébré son 131e anniversaire le 31 janvier 2008.
Les Redmen, qui occupent actuellement la 10e position au 'Top 10' parmi des
meilleurs équipes canadiennes de hockey universitaire, avec un record
de 15-7-1, célébreront l’anniversaire de leur équipe
mercredi soir, le 30 janvier, dans une match important a Concordia.
Les Stingers (11-11-1) sont quatrieme dans la division est de la ligue universitaire
ontarien huit points en arrière de la formation des Redmen, avec cinq
matches de joueur avant les séries.
Les étudiants de l’université montréalaise ont joué
un rôle déterminant dans la création du hockey. Selon un
article paru le 1er février 1877, dans l’ancienne publication McGill
University Gazette, les étudiants mcgillois ont fondé le tout
premier club de hockey organisé au monde et ont joué leur premier
match le 31 janvier 1877.
La première partie a mesuré McGill aux Victorias – un regroupement
de membres de la patinoire Victoria de Montréal – laquelle comptait
également des joueurs des équipes montréalaises de crosse
et de football. Le match historique, qui s’est terminé en une victoire
de 2 à 1 en faveur de McGill, s’est joué à la Patinoire
Victoria, entourée de la rue Drummond, du boulevard de Maisonneuve et
de la rue Dorchester (aujourd’hui le boulevard René-Lévesque).
Une succursale de l’entreprise de location de voitures National se trouve
maintenant à cet endroit.
L’équipe mcgilloise de 1877 a été mise sur pied deux
ans après la tenue du premier match organisé, le 3 mars 1875,
à la patinoire Victoria – auquel participaient plusieurs étudiants
de McGill. Lors du premier match, McGill affrontait les Victorias, en vertu
des règlements ci-dessous publiés dans le quotidien montréalais
The Gazette le 27 février 1877.
Après avoir joué contre les Patriotes, les Redmen accueilleront
les équipes des universités Ryerson et de Toronto, le vendredi
3 février et le samedi 4 février, respectivement.
RÈGLEMENTS DU HOCKEY SUR GLACE DE 1877
1. Le match débute et redémarre par une mise au jeu, au centre
de la glace. Les buts peuvent être changés après chaque
but compté.
2. Lorsqu’un joueur touche le ballon (i.e le disc), n’importe quel
joueur de la même équipe qui, à ce moment du lancer, est
plus près de la ligne de but de l’adversaire, est hors-jeu, et ne
peut toucher le ballon, ni empêcher l’un des joueurs de le faire,
et ce, de quelque façon que ce soit, jusqu’à ce que le ballon
ait été lancé. Les joueurs doivent toujours demeurer en
jeu.
3. Il est possible d’arrêter le ballon; cependant, il ne peut être
transporté ou frappé par aucune partie du corps. Il est interdit
de lever son bâton au-dessus des épaules. Il est également
interdit d’effectuer une charge par derrière, de faire trébucher,
de retenir un joueur par le collet, de donner un coup de pied ou un coup de
bâton sur les mollets.
4. Lorsque l’équipe à l’attaque frappe le ballon derrière
la ligne de but, ce dernier doit être replacé 15 verges (13,71
mètres) au-devant, en ligne droite. Une mise au jeu doit alors être
effectuée. Par contre, si le ballon est frappé par l’équipe
à laquelle la ligne de but appartient, un joueur du camp adverse est
autorisé à le frapper dans une distance inférieure à
une verge (0,914 mètre) du coin le plus près. À ce moment,
aucun joueur de l’équipe adverse ne doit se trouver à l’intérieur
de 20 verges (18,30 mètres) de la ligne de but. De plus, les défenseurs,
à l’exception du gardien de but, doivent se trouver derrière
la ligne de but.
5. Lorsque le ballon sort de la ligne de côté, un joueur de l’équipe
adverse doit le remettre en place, à l’endroit où il est
sorti. Le ballon ne doit pas être mis au jeu avant d’avoir touché
la glace. De plus, le joueur qui a remis le ballon au jeu ne pourra y toucher
jusqu’à ce qu’un autre joueur l’ait fait, tous les joueurs
étant alors derrière le ballon.
6. Dans l’éventualité où l’un des règlements
énumérés précédemment était transgressé,
le ballon doit être ramené et l’on procédera à
une mise au jeu.
7. Tout différend doit être réglé par les arbitres.
Dans le cas d’un désaccord, l’arbitre tranchera.
