Redmen 3 - RMC 2

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – Centre Mathieu Leclerc, a fifth-year senior from Quebec City, tallied his second power play goal of the game, at 15:44 of the final period as No.10-ranked McGill rallied for a 3-2 victory over Royal Military College at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The win avenged a 2-1 loss in Kingston the previous week and evened rookie RMC coach Adam Shell’s record at 1-1 against the team he previously played for and served with as an assistant coach.

Trailing 2-1 midway through the final period, rookie centre Simon Courcelles of Rosemere, Que., tied the game on a power play at 10:14 with his team-leading 16th goal, setting the stage for Leclerc’s heroics.

Leclerc, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound centre who sat out the entire first semester with a broken hand suffered in training camp, has five goals and one assist in nine games.

After Leclerc had given McGill a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period, Tyler Spice (17:51) and Paul Bradley replied to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead by the 6:02 mark of the third stanza.

Third-year netminder Jean-Michel Filiatrault of Laval, Que., made 27 saves for the win as McGill outshot RMC 39-29. He evened his record at 3-3-0 this year and is 15-5-3 lifetime in OUA play.

Adam Briggs had a strong game for RMC but took the loss and saw his record fall to 6-9-0.

The Redmen (17-7-1) will host Ottawa (12-11-2), at McConnell Arena, Saturday (7 p.m.), while RMC, which dropped to 10-14-2, will host Toronto.

Elsewhere in the OUA, Friday, Ottawa defeated Concordia 3-1, UQTR bombed visiting Carleton 7-1, Brock blanked UOIT 5-0 and Lakehead edged Laurier 3-2.

REDMEN RAP: The McGill power play went 3-for-9, while their penalty-killing unit snuffed out all 10 RMC man-advantage situations…The Redmen lead the 18-team league with a 90.2 success rate on the PK (147 of 163)… They also have the third-best power play in the league at 22.5 per cent (40 for 178)… Of McGill’s 96 goals scored, 46.9 per cent of them have come on special teams (40 PPG, 5 SHG).
