Redmen 1 - Ottawa 2
Game Report by Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL A shorthanded goal by Kevin Glode in the second period held
up as visiting Ottawa upset No.10-ranked McGill 2-1 in mens university
hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill dominated the game with a 36-13 margin in shots but were stymied by
Gee-Gees netminder Ryley Whitlock, a 5-foot-8, 168-pound freshman from
Calgary, who made 35 saves and improved to 9-4-0.
It was a costly loss for the second-place Redmen, who dropped to 17-8-1, four
points behind UQTR (19-5-1) in the OUA Far East, with just two games remaining
before playoffs. Ottawa (13-11-2) moved into sole possession of third place,
two points ahead of Carleton.
All scoring was in the middle period. Mathieu Desjardins gave the Gee-Gees
a 1-0 lead on a power play at 9:56. After Ottawa took a 2-0 lead, Shawn Shewchuk
made it 2-1 on a power play at 19:05.
Goaltender Mathieu Poitras, a senior from Gatineau, Que., was credited with
11 saves and took the loss. His record fell to 14-5-0.
McGill closes out regular season play at Carleton (Feb. 8) and home to UQTR
(Feb. 10). The Redmen, who have won three of four meetings vs. UQTR (including
a pre-season affair) can only catch the Pats for first place by winning both
remaining games while UQTR loses a home-and-home series to Concordia, then loses
to McGill.
REDMEN RAP: The Gee-Gees have managed only 24 shots in their last two games
versus McGill... The Red & White split their four-game series vs. the Gee-Gees
this season but are 3-5 over the last two years... The Redmen are 74-74-10 lifetime
versus the Gee-Gees, including a 39-37-3 record in the nations capital.
