Five marksmen hit target as Redmen clip Ravens
==============================
OTTAWA -- Shawn Shewchuk and Sam Bloom each scored a goal and assisted on another
as No.10-ranked McGill rallied twice for a 5-3 win over Carleton in mens
university hockey at the Carleton Ice House, Friday.
Down 1-0 on an early goal by Justin Caruana of Orono, Ont., McGill connected
on a pair of two-man power plays as Mathieu Leclerc of Quebec City and Shewchuk,
a native of Lloydminster, Alta., scored at 15:52 and 17:00, respectively.
Leclerc, who missed the entire first semester with a broken hand, now has six
goals and one assist in 11 games. Shewchuk, the top Redmen point-getter, now
has a 9-26-35 record in 27 contests.
But the pesky Ravens fought back in the middle period, taking a 3-2 lead on
goals from Francis Walker of St. Eustache, Que., and Mike Testa of Ottawa.
McGill rallied again with three unanswered markers in the final stanza.
Freshman Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., fooled Carleton netminder Doug
Jewer on a long backhanded shot at 10:48 and less than four minutes later, Serbian
native Marko Kovacevic gave McGill a two-goal lead.
Sam Bloom, a third-year centre from Toronto, rounded out the scoring for the
Redmen with his seventh of the campaign into an empty net at 19:35.
McGill goalie Mathieu Poitras of Gatineau, Que., made 24 saves and improved
to 15-6-0. Jewer was credited with 33 saves in a losing cause and evened his
record at 9-9-0.
McGill (18-8-1), which will finish second in the OUA Far East, will host No-6-ranked
UQTR (20-5-1) in the season finale on Sunday at McConnell Arena (7 p.m.). McGill
is 13-9-3 in the last 25 matchups with their bitter archrivals overall, with
three wins in four meetings this season, including a pre-season victory. The
Redmen have not lost a regular season home game to UQTR in their last eight
contests (7-0-1), dating back a 2-1 overtime setback on Oct. 25, 2003.
McGill, which has qualified for post-season play for the 22nd time in 25 years,
ended up second in the division but will be seeded third in the conference for
playoff purposes. They are slated to open a best-of-three quarterfinal playoff
series at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. McGills first-round opponent could
either be Carleton, Concordia, Ottawa or Queens, depending upon who clinches
the sixth and final seed in the OUA East Conference.
REDMEN RAP: Two McGill grads, including former Redmen team captain Martin Routhier,
make up the ownership team that recently purchased the St. Johns Fog Devils,
a team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
Routhier, an all-star
rearguard with the Redmen from 1993 to 1998, will serve as team president
The
Fog Devils will be relocated to Verdun Auditorium in Montreal. No word yet on
whether they will retain coach and GM Real Paiement, a former McGill defenceman
(1983-85) and assistant coach (1985-88).
