MONCTON (CIS) – University of New Brunswick fourth-year forward Rob Hennigar of Jordan, Ont. is the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey player of the year.

Hennigar becomes only the second Varsity Red to claim the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy since it was first presented in 1975-76. Forward John LeBlanc was the recipient in 1985-86.

Other CIS major award winners announced Wednesday night in Moncton were Wilfrid Laurier’s Craig Voakes of St. Thomas, Ont., who received the Clare Drake Award as rookie of the year, Saint Mary’s Dan Rudisuela of St. Catharines, Ont., who claimed the R.W. Pugh Award as the most sportsmanlike player, Brock’s Murray Nystrom, who captured the Father George Kehoe Memorial award as coach of the year, and Saskatchewan’s Curtis Austring of Stewart Valley, Sask., who received the Dr. Randy Gregg Award recognizing his excellence in hockey, academics and community involvement.

Hennigar, a bachelor of recreation and sports studies and concurrent education student, led the nation in scoring with 15 goals and 43 assists – also a CIS high – for 58 points in 27 conference games as he helped defending national champion UNB set Atlantic University Sport single-season records for wins (26) and points (53). The five-foot-11, 200-pound playmaker, who also tied for the CIS lead with four shorthanded markers, kept his torrid pace in the playoffs tallying 10 points (1-9-10) in five outings as the V-Reds swept St. Thomas and Saint Mary’s to enter this week’s University Cup tournament as the number-one seed.

An assistant captain for the second straight season, Hennigar is named to the first all-Canadian team for the first time. A former AUS rookie of the year and member of the CIS all-rookie team back in 2004-05, he was a second-team all-Canadian a year ago after he finished seventh in the national scoring race with 42 points in 25 contests. The 24-year-old was named UNB male athlete of the year in 2006-07 after he guided the V-Reds to the second University Cup championship in team history and led Canada to the gold medal at the 2007 Winter Universiade in Italy, where he tied for the team lead with nine points in six games, including two goals in a 3-1 gold-medal win over Russia.

Hennigar joined the V-Reds following a productive four-year major junior career with the Windsor Spitfires, where he earned a nod as an OHL all-star. He tallied 79 points in 68 games in his final OHL season in 2003-04.

“Rob has made a positive, significant difference in the success of our hockey program,” said UNB head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “This season he has culminated his excellent four-year career by having his best campaign and leading our team to our best regular schedule ever.”

Voakes, a geography major, is the second Golden Hawk to win the Drake Award since its inception in 1985-86. Forward John Spoltore was honoured in 1992-93.

The five-foot-11, 175-pound forward was stellar in his university debut leading the nation with 23 goals in 26 conference games and finishing with 42 points, which tied him for ninth in the country and gave him a share of the team lead with his older brother Mark, a fourth-year centre and his linemate for most of the campaign. The younger Voakes, who had a 15-game scoring streak over the course of the schedule, also led CIS in the regular season with three hat tricks, was second with five game-winning goals and third with 10 power-play markers – an OUA high.

Voakes arrived at Laurier after a five-year OHL career during which he tallied 238 points in 324 games with Sudbury, Kitchener, Windsor and Sarnia. He also participated in the “Making the Cut” reality TV series.

“Whenever you add a player of Craig’s calibre, it’s going to be a huge plus for your hockey program,” said Laurier second-year bench boss Kelly Nobes. “He has been nothing short of sensational and was our go-to guy in his first season. He is more than deserving of this award.”

Rudisuela, an academic all-Canadian who has completed his undergraduate degree in Commerce and is currently working towards his MBA, is the first Huskie to be named the CIS most sportsmanlike player.

The fourth-year team captain tied for 10th in AUS scoring with 33 points in 26 conference contests while being assessed only 14 penalty minutes all season.

The AUS most valuable player and a first-team all-Canadian a year ago, he was an assistant captain on Canada’s gold-medal-winning squad at the 2007 Winter Universiade in Italy, where he finished third on the team with eight points in six outings.

"Dan distinguishes himself from his peers as a result of his inner drive, motivation and desire for greatness," commented Saint Mary’s head coach Trevor Stienburg. "Witnessing Dan's growth as an athlete and as a person has shown me that through hard work and determination anything is possible. He is a great role model for all athletes and we're very proud to have him as a recipient of this prestigious award."

Nystrom becomes the first Brock bench boss to be named CIS coach of the year since the inception of the Kehoe Memorial Award in 1970-71.

In his 10th campaign at the helm of the Badgers, the Thunder Bay, Ont. native who now resides in Wellan, Ont. guided his troops to first place in the OUA Mid-West Division with a 17-8-0-3 record and 37 points, a seven-point improvement from a 14-12-1-1 mark in 2006-07. Brock’s success continued in the playoffs with upsets of No.8-ranked Western Ontario and No.3-Lakehead, an appearance in the OUA Queen’s Cup final and the team’s first-ever berth in the University Cup tournament.

An assistant coach with Canada’s entry at the 2005 Winter Universiade in Austria, Nystrom acted as assistant coach at Western for one season in 1992-93 and was an assistant with the London Knights and the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL prior to moving in his current position in the spring of 1998. As a player, he captained both the Knights and the UNB Varsity Reds, and attended the Buffalo Sabres training camp in the fall of 1986.

Austring is the first Saskatchewan Huskie to receive the Dr. Randy Gregg Award.

Despite being sidelined with injuries for part of the campaign, the six-foot-one forward and alternate team captain managed 16 points in 16 conference games this season as the Huskies finished second in the Canada West standings before reaching the conference final and earning a trip to the University Cup tourney.

A double major in the Murray Edwards School of Business, Austring has been both a CIS academic all-Canadian Team and a member of the Huskie Athletics all-academic teams. He is a leader in the community, working in his church and at bible camps in the summer, and the recipient of the Canada West UBC Hockey Alumni Trophy for sportsmanship and ability the past two seasons.

Prior to joining the Huskies, Austring played in the WHL for the Kamloops Blazers, Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers, skating in the Memorial Cup. He claimed leadership, MVP and community service awards with his major junior teams and was also an assistant coach with Medicine Hat at the age of 21 when the Tigers captured the Memorial Cup in 2003.

The all-Canadian teams were also announced on Wednesday.

Joining Hennigar on the first CIS squad are Lakehead fourth-year goaltender Chris Whitley of Thunder Bay, Ont., Alberta fifth-year defenceman Harlan Anderson of Vernon, B.C., Lakehead second-year rearguard Jordan C. Smith of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., UQTR third-year forward Mathieu Gravel of Greenfield Park, Que., and Calgary first-year forward Jared Aulin of Calgary.

Whitley and Anderson, a second-team CIS all-star in 2006-07, are the OUA and Canada West players of the year, respectively. Whitley kept an unblemished 15-0 record in conference play as Lakehead’s number one keeper.

Aulin, a former NHL player who skated in 17 games for the Los Angeles Kings in 2002-03, tallied 34 points in only 16 regular-season games after joining the Dinos.

The second all-Canadian team is comprised of UNB second-year goalie Michael Ouzas of Hamilton, Saint Mary’s third-year defenceman Scott Hotham of Barrie, Ont., UBC third-year blueliner Brad Zanon of Port Moody, B.C., Western Ontario fourth-year forward Kevin Richardson of South Surrey, B.C., Saskatchewan fifth-year forward Mason Wallin of Prince Albert, Sask., and Saint Mary’s third-year forward Marc Rancourt of Gloucester, Ont.

Regina puck stopper Brant Hilton of Winnipeg, Saint Mary’s defenceman Andrew Hotham of Barrie, Ont., UQTR rearguard Frederic St-Denis of Greenfield Park, Que., Alberta forward Eric Hunter of Oakbank, Ont., and UNB forward Hunter Tremblay of Timmins, Ont. join Voakes on the all-rookie squad.

The 2008 Cavendish University Cup tournament, hosted by Université de Moncton at the Moncton Coliseum, gets under way Thursday with pool-play duels between No.1-UNB and No.5-Brock at 2 p.m. Atlantic Time, and No.2-Alberta and No.6-Moncton at 8 p.m. (AT). The gold-medal final is set for Sunday at 8 p.m. (AT), live on Rogers Sportsnet. Saturday’s two pool-play games will also air live on Rogers Sportsnet, at 2 p.m. (AT) and 8 p.m. (AT).

Hennigar de UNB choisi joueur de l’année au pays

MONCTON (SIC) – L’attaquant de quatrième saison Rob Hennigar, de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick, est le joueur de l’année de Sport interuniversitaire canadien en hockey masculin.

Originaire de Jordan, Ont., Hennigar est seulement le deuxième joueur du Varsity Reds à mériter le trophée Sénateur Joseph A. Sullivan depuis sa première présentation en 1975-1976. L’attaquant John LeBlanc avait reçu l’honneur en 1985-1986.

Les autres récipiendaires de prix majeurs honorés mercredi soir à Moncton sont Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) de Wilfrid Laurier, qui a mérité le prix Clare Drake à titre de recrue de l’année, Dan Rudisuela (St. Catharines, Ont.) de Saint Mary’s, nommé joueur le plus gentilhomme, Murray Nystrom de Brock, qui a reçu le prix commémoratif Père George Kehoe à titre d’entraîneur de l’année, de même que Curtis Austring (Stewart Valley, Sask.) de Saskatchewan, qui s’est vu remettre le prix Dr Randy Gregg en reconnaissance de ses performances sportives et académiques et de son engagement communautaire.

Hennigar, un bachelier en loisirs et activités sportives qui étudie présentement en enseignement, a remporté le championnat des marqueurs de SIC grâce à une récolte de 15 buts et 43 passes – également un sommet au pays – pour 58 points en 27 rencontres de saison régulière, ce qui a aidé les champions nationaux en titre à établir des records de la conférence Atlantique (SUA) pour le nombre de victoires (26) et de points (53) en une saison. Le fabricant de jeux de 5’11’’ et 200 livres, qui a également pris le premier rang au pays avec quatre filets en désavantage numérique, a maintenu son rythme d’enfer en séries, amassant 10 points (1-9-10) en cinq sorties alors que le V-Reds balayait St. Thomas et Saint Mary’s pour mériter le statut de favori en vue du tournoi de la Coupe Université.

Assistant capitaine pour une deuxième saison consécutive, Hennigar mérite une place au sein de la première équipe d’étoiles canadiennes pour une première fois en carrière. Ancienne recrue de l’année de SUA et membre de l’équipe d’étoiles des recrues de SIC en 2004-2005, il avait été retenu au sein de la deuxième formation canadienne l’an dernier alors qu’il avait terminé septième au pays avec 42 points en 25 matchs. Le patineur de 24 ans a été nommé athlète masculin de l’année à UNB en 2006-2007 après qu’il eut mené le V-Reds au deuxième titre de la Coupe Université de son histoire et guidé le Canada à la conquête de la médaille d’or aux Universiades d’hiver 2007 en Italie, là où il s’est avéré le meilleur marqueur de l’équipe avec neuf points en six parties, incluant deux buts lors d’une victoire de 3-1 aux dépens de la Russie en finale.

Hennigar s’est joint au V-Reds suite à une excellente carrière junior au cours de laquelle il a évolué pendant quatre ans avec les Spitfires de Windsor. Il a récolté 79 points en 68 rencontres lors de sa dernière campagne dans la ligue de l’Ontario, en 2003-2004.

« Rob fait toute une différence au sein de notre programme, il se veut une influence extrêmement positive, a dit l’entraîneur-chef de UNB, Gardiner MacDougall. « Il connaît de loin sa meilleure campagne et ce n’est pas un hasard si l’équipe connaît jusqu’ici la meilleure saison de son histoire. »

Étudiant en géographie, Voakes est le deuxième membre des Golden Hawks à remporter le prix Drake depuis son instauration en 1985-1986. L’attaquant John Spoltore avait été honoré en 1992-1993.

L’attaquant de 5’11’’ et 175 livres a été étincelant à ses débuts universitaires, terminant au premier rang au pays avec 23 buts en 26 parties de calendrier régulier et amassant 42 points, ce qui lui a valu une égalité au septième rang au pays et une égalité au sommet des pointeurs de son équipe avec son frère aîné Mark, un centre de quatrième année et son compagnon de trio pour la majorité de la campagne. Le cadet de la famille, qui a connu une séquence de 15 matchs consécutifs avec au moins un point au cours de la saison, a également pris le premier rang au pays avec trois trucs du chapeau, le deuxième échelon avec cinq buts gagnants et le troisième avec 10 filets en avantage numérique, un sommet en Ontario.

Voakes s’est présenté à Laurier suite à une carrière junior de cinq ans au cours de laquelle il a récolté 238 points en 324 parties avec Sudbury, Kitchener, Windsor et Sarnia. Il a également participé à l’émission de télé réalité « Making the Cut ».

« Lorsque vous avez la chance d’ajouter un joueur de la trempe de Craig à votre alignement, c’est évident que votre formation sera automatiquement meilleure, a commenté le pilote de Laurier, Kelly Nobes. Il a été tout simplement sensationnel à sa première campagne avec nous et il mérite pleinement cet honneur. »

Rudisuela, étudiant au MBA et membre du tableau d’honneur académique de SIC, est le premier joueur des Huskies à être nommé joueur le plus gentilhomme.

À sa quatrième campagne, le capitaine de l’équipe a terminé à égalité au 10e rang dans l’Atlantique avec 33 points en 26 parties tout en n’écopant que de 14 minutes de punition.

Joueur par excellence de SUA et membre de la première équipe d’étoiles de SIC l’an dernier, il a agit comme assistant capitaine avec l’équipe canadienne qui a remporté l’or aux Universiades d’hiver de 2007 en Italie, terminant au troisième rang des marqueurs de la formation avec huit points en six sorties.

« Dan se distingue par sa détermination et son désir d’être le meilleur dans tout ce qu’il entreprend, » a souligné Trevor Stienburg, entraîneur-chef à Saint Mary’s. Il est un modèle pour tous les étudiants athlètes et nous sommes très fiers de le voir récolter cet honneur. »

Nystrom devient le premier pilote de Brock honoré à titre d’entraîneur de l’année de SIC depuis l’instauration du prix Kehoe en 1970-1971.

À sa 10e saison à la barre des Badgers, l’entraîneur natif de Thunder Bay, Ont., et résident de Wellan, Ont., a guidé les siens à la première place au sein de la division Mid-Ouest de la conférence de l’Ontario (SUO) grâce à un dossier de 17-8-0-3 et 37 points, une amélioration de sept points comparativement à une fiche de 14-12-1-1 en 2006-2007. Les succès de Brock se sont poursuivis en séries avec des victoires surprises face à Western Ontario, classée huitième au pays, et Lakehead (No. 3), une participation à la finale de SUO et une toute première présence au tournoi national de la Coupe Université.

Entraîneur-adjoint de la formation du Canada aux Universiades d’hiver de 2005 en Autriche, Nystrom a agit à titre d’adjoint avec Western pendant une saison en 1992-1993 et avec les Knights de London et les Wolves de Sudbury dans la ligue junior de l’Ontario avant de prendre les commandes des Badgers au printemps de 1998. Comme joueur, il a été capitaine tant avec les Knights qu’avec le Varsity Reds de UNB, et a pris part au camp d’entraînement des Sabres de Buffalo à l’automne 1986.

Austring est le premier représentant des Huskies de la Saskatchewan à recevoir le prix Dr Randy Gregg.

Malgré une blessure qui lui a fait rater plusieurs parties, l’attaquant et assistant capitaine de 6’1’’ réussi à amasser 16 points en autant de parties lors du calendrier régulier alors que les Huskies prenaient le deuxième rang au sein de Canada-Ouest, avant d’atteindre la finale de conférence et d’obtenir un laissez-passer pour le tournoi de la Coupe Université.

Étudiant en affaires à la Murray Edwards School of Business, Austring est membre du tableau d’honneur académique canadien de SIC et du tableau d’honneur de l’Université de la Saskatchewan. Impliqué au sein de sa communauté, il est bénévole auprès de son église et de camps scolaires et religieux au cours de la période estivale, et a reçu le trophée Canada West UBC Alumni pour son esprit sportif au terme des deux dernières saisons.

Avant de se joindre aux Huskies, Austring a évolué dans la ligue junior de l’Ouest avec les Blazers de Kamloops, les Pats de Regina et les Tigers de Medicine Hat, participant au tournoi de la Coupe Memorial à une reprise. Il a mérité de nombreux prix pour son leadership et son implication communautaire au cours de son stage junior et, alors qu’il n’était âgé que de 21 ans, était entraîneur-adjoint avec Medicine Hat lorsque les Tigers ont remporté la coupe Memorial en 2003.

Les équipes d’étoiles canadiennes ont également été dévoilées mercredi.

Hennigar est accompagné au sein de la première formation de SIC du gardien de quatrième année Chris Whitley (Thunder Bay, Ont.) de Lakehead, du défenseur de cinquième année Harlan Anderson (Vernon, C.-B.) d’Alberta, de l’arrière de deuxième année Jordan C. Smith (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) de Lakehead, de l’attaquant de troisième année Mathieu Gravel (Greenfield Park, Qué.) de l’UQTR, et de l’attaquant de première année Jared Aulin (Calgary) de Calgary.

Whitley et Anderson, membre de la deuxième équipe de SIC en 2006-2007, sont les joueurs par excellence des conférences Ontario et Canada-Ouest, respectivement. Whitley a conservé une fiche immaculée de 15-0 devant le filet de Lakehead en saison régulière.

Aulin, un ex-joueur de la LNH ayant participé à 17 rencontres avec les Kings de Los Angeles en 2002-2003, a amassé 34 points en seulement 16 parties lors du calendrier régulier après qu’il se soit joint aux Dinos.

La deuxième formation canadienne est composée du cerbère de deuxième année Michael Ouzas (Hamilton) de UNB, du défenseur de troisième année Scott Hotham (Barrie, Ont.) de Saint Mary’s, de l’arrière de troisième année Brad Zanon (Port Moody, C.-B.) de UBC, de l’attaquant de quatrième année Kevin Richardson (South Surrey, C.-B.) de Western Ontario, de l’attaquant de cinquième année Mason Wallin (Prince Albert, Sask.) de Saskatchewan, et de l’attaquant de troisième année Marc Rancourt (Gloucester, Ont.) de Saint Mary’s.

Le gardien Brant Hilton (Winnipeg) de Regina, le défenseur Andrew Hotham (Barrie, Ont.) de Saint Mary’s, le défenseur Frédéric St-Denis (Greenfield Park, Qué.) de l’UQTR, l’attaquant Eric Hunter (Oakbank, Ont.) d’Alberta, et l’attaquant Hunter Tremblay (Timmins, Ont.) de UNB se joignent à Voakes au sein de l’équipe des recrues de SIC.

Le tournoi de la Coupe Université Cavendish 2008, organisé par l’Université de Moncton, se met en branle jeudi au Colisée de Moncton avec la présentation des duels de ronde préliminaire opposant UNB à Brock à 14h (Atlantique) et Alberta à Moncton à 20h (HA). La finale nationale sera disputée dimanche à 20h (HA) et sera diffusée en direct sur Rogers Sportsnet. Les deux affrontements du tournoi à la ronde de samedi à 14h (HA) et 20h (HA) seront également présentés en direct sur Rogers Sportsnet.
