Hawks swoop, Redmen swoon in dying seconds
===============================
WATERLOO -- Mark Voakes of St. Thomas, Ont., netted a hat-trick and Jean-Michel
Rizk of Dunham, Que., scored the game-winner with just 28.7 seconds left, as
Laurier rallied with three unanswered goals in the final period to defeat the
visiting Redmen 5-4 in CIS mens preseason hockey, Friday.
Rizk streaked down the left wing, cut into the crease and jammed the puck past
the McGill keeper.
The game was a showcase for the high-level of skill in CIS hockey and the pace
was expedient right from the drop of the puck, with McGill playing fast and
precise, Laurier big and strong. The two teams put on a scoring clinic for the
200+ fans, exchanging goal after goal.
McGill fired the opening salvo as the puck was accidentally shoveled in front
of the crease and Maxime Langelier-Parent, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound freshman from
Levy, Que., made no mistake as he backhanded the puck past Jeff MacDougald of
Shallow Lake, Ont., who had no time to react.
Laurier answered soon after, however, as a failed clearing attempt by McGill
-- which left both their defencemen caught in the neutral zone -- allowed Rizk
to pull the puck down and quickly relay it across the ice to Voakes who fired
it in the top-shelf.
McGill defenceman Ben Gadzic, a junior from Toronto, wired a one-timer from
the top of the face-off circle into the top corner to give the Redmen a 2-1
lead after the opening period.
Early in the middle stanza, sniper Sam Bloom, also from Toronto, was sprung
loose on a breakaway and scored on a nifty forehand-backhand deke on MacDougald.
Voakes scored his second of the game to narrow the gap to 3-2 after two.
In the final period, Redmen rookie Ben Morse, another Toronto native, sniped
one in from the slot that dinged off the crossbar to cap the Redmen scoring
blitz and make it 4-2 in favour of McGill.
Laurier roared back, answering with a beautiful tip-in as Voakes, alone in
the slot, redirected Rizks fluttering wrist shot to complete the hat-trick.
Shortly after, Jordan Bonneville of St. Agatha, Ont., snuck a shot through
the five-hole from the point, to even the score at 4-4.
McGill, which fell to 1-2-0 in preseason play, will take on the Waterloo Warriors
Saturday.
GAME NOTES: Since this game was a preseason tilt, the fans were treated to
a pre-arranged shootout after the final whistle had blown. McGills Ben
Morse netted the only marker as he went blocker side on MacDougald.
